Default None of the windows, Interior Lights, or Cruise Control Work?

Recently purchased a 96 Volvo 850 Turbo that sat for a while, now that I've got it started and driving, I noticed that none of the windows, nor the interior lights work, the power mirrors work, also the cruise control doesn't work, are all of these run off of the same circuit? maybe I could've blown one of the big fuses?

  • Pwr windows: circuit breaker #37 in fuse box in engine compartment (driver's side rear). This is fed by overload relay, but that feeds lots of other stuff too, like climate control panel.
  • Looks like interior lights all go thru a "central locking/delayed courtesy lighting relay" in same fuse box. Might rap on it a few time to see if you can resurrect it.

Is the #37 a normal fuse, because I don't have a 37, do I need to unscrew the four torx screws and remove the plastic top to get to 37?

It's not a normal fuse; it's a 12V circuit breaker; looks like a big fuse in tin can.

You can barely see it with the small fuse cover popped off; it's in the lower left corner (as you're standing over the front driver's side fender). But you have to pull the larger cover (four #25 torx screws) to remove or replace it. If it's not there, that would explain why your windows don't work.

Default Check the relay.

The relays are under the fuses case.

Okies, so I tried replacing all the "tin can fuses" with no success, I thought I might at least be able to get the power roof open, seeing that that had its own fuse, sadly this didn't help any ideas? Update: the lights by my feet work when I open the doors, but the lights on the roof don't work at all, nor does the cruise control, niether do the windows.

Do you have pwr to circuit breaker #37 with key in ACC or RUN position?

You didn't mention the sunroof not working either; the common denominator there is the overload relay; see my post #2 in this thread...

Check under the center console to see if the switches are plugged in. There are plugs for the transmission mode control, heated seat control, and windows under there. Someone else had the same issue here a while back and that was their problem.

No power with the car running, are there multiple overload relays, or is that huge one the overload relay?

OK, no pwr at circuit breaker #37 w/key ON, right?

Assuming it's wired the same as my '95 850...

Circuit breaker #37 is fed by Overload Relay #3 (OR3), it's in the same CEU just in front of the Fuel Pump Relay (let me know if you need a pic).

With the key OFF pull out this Overload Relay #3; look under the relay at the terminals noting the numbering on each terminal; relate those terminal numbers to the relay socket. You should have 12v pwr (even w/key off) at terminal 30 of OR3 socket; if you don't, report back, but assuming you do...

With continuity checker (DVOM in resistance mode) ck terminal 87 at OR3 socket to the rearward terminal of circuit breaker #37; should have continuity. Terminal 85 of OR3 socket should have continuity to ground (neg post of battery).

If all this cks outs, last thing to ck is terminal 86 of OR3 socket, should get 12V w/key in ACC or RUN position.

If all above cks out, then OR3 is bad; you can jumper terminal 30 to 87 to bypass OR3 relay; then you should have pwr to circuit breaker #37.

Let us know what you find.
