Is this Normal
Hello,
I have a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan and I have been loving it since I put a few bucks to get the running condition better. When in sport mode, under hard acceleration, it revs around 5,100 RPMs. Is this about right? Also, is that bad for the car to do a hard acceration from say 10mph to 70-80mph? I do not sqeal the tires, I usually will only accerate hard while moving 10mph or more and when the cars temp gauge is at its normal just pass half mark.
-Thanks

Pretty sure mine red lines at about 5500 when I floor it and it shifts automatically right at or just before the red line. Not really sure what you're asking when you say it revs around 5,100 RPMs und hard acceleration? Do you mean when you floor it, it only goes to 5,100 rpm's?
Sport mode will increase the range between shifts. If yours is shifting at about 5,100 RPM's under hard acceleration that sounds about right. Sport mode is designed to get more out of the engines RPM range.

As long as you don't do it when the engine has not reached the normal operating temp (about 15-20 min. of driving), keep changing the oil (full synthetic for turbo) & filter (MANN/OEM) regularly and stay off the red-line (not to over-rev), it should not harm anything except the fuel consumption and accelerated wear on the tyres. Make sure your timing belt + its pulleys + hydro tensioner get replaced at every 70,000 miles or 5 years.

You have to floor them every once in a while to blow the carbon out. If you tell the cop you were just blowing the carbon out, they are very understanding. haha

Thanks again for the advice/tips. Sometimes I will accelerate pretty hard after driving about 2-3 miles of 40-50mph. This is because from my house, about 3 miles away there is a pretty fun stretch off an intersection. I say it is only 3 miles away, but when I get there, the temperature gauge reads about 2:30-3:00 which is as high as it ever goes. When it is in that position, does that mean that it is at full operating temp, or does it still warm up with the gauge in that position? (Sorry for the confusing question)
-Thanks

These cars run great when pushed a bit from time to time. Our 95 850 has 190 K on it and I floor it from time to time ( not to blow the carbon out, but because it is fun!) Anyway a big thing to do after a good run is to make sure you let the turbo spool down before shutting the car off. After a good run, I usually let the car idle for about 30 seconds to 1 minute before I shut it off.

3 O'clock is the normal operating temp (nominal) for 850s, but I would still drive easy at least for the first 10 minutes so that the engine, tranny, brakes, suspension & steering also have a chance to work out.
