Default Now this is strange

1996 850 Rwagon....

Ok so I was driving along probaly @ about 90/100 mph and car started chuging...total trip about 15 miles. So I pull into a gas station noticed the fluid lightblinked on and off also to the oil light as well .mind you the car temp gage never rose indicating that i didnt overhaet the car.Ok..turned the car off, smoke billowing from the hood. I poped the hood noteced no water inthe resivor and a little oil spray on the exaust manifold and starter moter or maybey it was the altenator left side of car. sooooo.... I started looking around....
found out one of the lines aboove the turbo that caries water burst witha big split these two line go into brass nipples that lead into the firewall (im asuming to the heater core and back out.

now... im going to replace that hose but still puzzled about the oil spray? wasent to low on oil.I added some just for good messure but still puzzled where the oil came from? maybe the turbo inlet? dunno..god oh god I hope I didnt blow a head gasket that would beworst night mare.

ok heres what i did i blew air into where you add oil (top of motor) noticed the air that I blew in there came back out through the air intake!!!!! WTF. is this normal? air came outright before the air mass censor housing and the air filter box (which i hadremoved cuzI havea after market air intake with out that big ol clunky air filter box.

Any Ideas what the [:'(]is going on? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASSE help/comment.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you,

Fix the coolant hose and clean everything up good and check for the oil leak from there.

Somewhere in the Middle East.....[8D]

PLEEEEEEEEEEEASSE accept my apology for lame sense of humor.

Well, refill the cooling system and clean the engine thoroughly with brake cleaner spray or engine degreaser. Should you decide to use the latter, do not spray water all over the place. After that, locate the oil leak. Even if it was the head gasket, it isn't the end of the world. Some people have gone through worse nightmare, such as the timing belt failure at cruise[:@].

>ok heres what i did i blew air into where you add oil (top of motor) noticed the air that I blew in there came back out through the air intake!!!!! WTF.

Some of the intake valves were probably open and the air you blew into the oil filler opening came out, nothing to be concerned of.

Someone had once noted that the coolant temp gauge doesn't tell you anything, as the heat is transferred to the coolant via convection with oil; if the oil was lost, the coolant gauge can indicate normal while the engine experiences extensive damage. I checked this info with my college instructors and none of them had heard of it but could happen.

Anyway, clean, replace ruptured hoses, refill coolant, double-check engine oil level and try again. If you are worried about the head gasket, have a compression test done.

I hope this gets you started.

Hi Timothy,

If the oil is leaking from the valve cover, have it repaired at a dealer or an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/European cars. The valve cover on 850 is not like valve covers on other cars; it also acts as camshaft holders and if one does not know the removal/re-installation procedure, a damage can result.

There are some locations that are known to leak engine oil, such as:
- Oil cooler hoses (especially at the joint between the "hose" part and the metal hose-end).
- Oil filler cap, oil seals & gaskets (due to neglected PCV system servicing).
- Turbo oil return line (difficult to see without lifting the front end).
- Turbocharger (minor leak is normal).
- Etc...

Locating the leak ishalf the battle, so try cleaning again and make sure you know exactly where the leak is so we can guide you to the right direction. A photo image would be great. I'll leave you with some references.

Thanks for the quick reply. Pictures are worth a thousand words. My main concern is keeping the water in heh then looking into the oil...because im not even sure if its leaking oil i just noticed a little but seemed like every where on the engine had greeze or built up oil.

I my realy right now trying to find out where all the water isgoing.... ill go take some pics and be right back. but the location from where its dri[ping i mentioned above and remeber a water ling burst that i found ive al ready replaced that one so my somthings cause excese presure or somthing i dunno but im bound and detremend to find out.

Hi Timothy,

If you have an access to a pressure tester, I would pressure-test the cooling system. Leak should appear when the system is pressurised, and the pressure gauge reading should drop. AutoZone rents out pressure-testers, but I am not sure if their tester fits the expansion reservoir on 850. It probably needs an adapter to make it fit.

If you do not have an accessto a pressure-tester, you can let the engine idle for approx20 minutes; this stresses the cooling system. Be sure to set the heater setting at the hottest so that heated coolant flows into the heater core.

I hope you find the leak soon.

well just got the verdict back from the mechanic. He told me the Head gasket blew.It was kinda no Surprise since when i broke down ever single coolant lines in the car burst open draining the coolant leading to a blown head gasket..But what would cause so much pressure in the coolant system to explode all the hoses? is my theory totally wrong,. I'm having him replace the head gasket as we speak just hope he checks other things while at it.[&o]

Would the thermostat freezing shut cause that? I'm just guessing, but not a very educated guess.

Very well possible and the extra speed = Higher pressure.

TY , yea... this one stretch of highway is very hard to drive 65 :P. These diagnose makes since. I just want to do what ever to make sure it doesent happen again. Hope the mechanic straightens it out. I wish i had mechanical knowledge, im still learning "young".So is there any other possible damage that might have occurred . should i have him look into replacing other things on the car whiles its in?
Thanks for ever 1's opinions & help,
Timothy Knight
