Default OBD II plug not working..

Well I brought my new 97 Volvo home.. I fixed the major oil leak that it had from the Oil return line.. The engine line has been on since I bought, so I thought I would go to AutoZone and get the codes read.. Well when we plugged in 2 diff scanners none of them would even turn on.. Anyone know any reason why they dont work and where can I get some info on fixing the OBD II plug..

Also this is the plug below the radion .....

Model is a 97 850 GLT.

Yes the OBDII plug is under the radio and under the coin holder.
Maybe someone had the console out and pinched a wire installing it.

With the key on, you should have 12 volts at one of the terminals, I can't remember which one, I would need to see a wiring diagram.

I'm betting pinched or broken wire. I too know you are supposed to have 12V running to the plug as a power source to the scanner when it is plugged in, but I cannot remember which pin it is either.

Note: The diagrams are for turbo. NA may differ.

The OBDII port needs to have a power supply for a scanner to work with it, well at least any scanner I've used. In a GM (chev, buick, pontiac, ... ) it's common to ask the owner if the cigarette lighter is working if the scanner won't hook up. I found out from a GM tech that the ALDL or OBDII port is on the same circuit as the cigarette lighter and if they pop that fuse and you plug in a scanner it doesn't self turn on. If you power the scanner up you get "Scanner unable to connect" or something similar depending on the model of the scanner.

On our 850s it's on the circuit with the interior lights. If they are out, then it's likely the circuit is dead and a scanner will not be able to connect.

You should check to see if all your fuses are good. After that you might want to try a wiring diagram to see which pin is the power supply pin in that connector.

You might want to check if your interior lights are working. They're on the same circuit as the scanner port. On my 1996 NA 850 wagon, it's the #15 fuse, if memory serves.
