Red face 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo

Took a trip to Chicago to buy this 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo. Bought it for $2,000 from the second owner, who had it for over 12 years.

Painted the grille and roof trim flat black, sanded and painted the badges silver sparkle, remounted the front undertray and mudflap.

WOW. I was told by a Volvo shop that the factory radio could not be replaced, due to integration with the alarm system. That's the only thing that's kept me from replacing the factory radio with something that will play burned CD's with Mp3's on them.

Yeah, you can rip out every bit of the stereo and replace it without concern. I replaced the head unit, added an amp & woofer, and replaced all eight speakers in my wagon. When you do it, buy a wire harness & save yourself the grief of wire splicing.

This is the best news I've had all day. I won't do it myself, because I don't want to mess anything up, but thank GOD I can replace the factory radio! :-D Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony, Here I come!!

What did you do for size/fit compatability? I bought some 6x9 kickers for the behind-the-seat set and they are too deep. Was thinking about busting out teh dremmel and making them fit?

Yeah, as long as your speaker grille covers the speaker and you like its appearance, make the hole and make them fit. If you took it to a shop, that's exactly what they'd do. Just don't cut any important wires

If you've never done any audio work in your car, take a few minutes and visit www.the12volt.com. It's a great site and you'll wind up spending hours digging into all of the cool stuff.

Here are some potato quality pictures of a new to me '97 850 I picked up yesterday. The previous owner bought the car brand new, and kept meticulous records of every bit of maintenance done to the car since '97. The odometer stopped counting at 125k, and the previous owner kept every gas receipt since then. The estimated mileage is roughly 140k miles.
