I am looking at at a 1997 GLT wagon with 67,000 miles. It has the 190hp low pressure turbo. I know nothing about the 1997 model as far as its dependability or problems. Is this a good engine?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

 

Supposed to be the best year for 850. 5 cyl. engines are very good. Check tranny fluid.

 

Agreed 1997 was the Best year for the 850.
But had some of the problems the older cars did.

 

check the timing belt, if it hasn't been replaced do so. Tranny flush, oil change, RMS (Rear Main Seal on turbo), (wires, cap, rotor). check vaccum lines, and turbo hoses. If any are busted or going to be, replace with silicone hoses from Stylin Motors Inc who sell both vaccum lines and turbo hoses, or get turbo hoses from Viva Performance that are made by SAMCO.
