Default p0442/minor emissions leak

Hi all,

You've been tremendously helpful in the past, so here's another for you. I know what the code means and realize that it's probably a hose. I have no safe way (or place) to jack the car up, so I'm really stuck taking it to a mechanic to check.. BUT, I just moved out of state and do not have a mechanic I trust down here yet. In fact, I'm pretty sure the area (MD near DC) is populated with sketchballs. So the question is -- is this something that is a real safety concern? Or can I make the 500mi drive up to my trusty mechanic (I'm driving there anyway next weekend) without worrying?

Alternately, if anyone knows any good mechanics near College Park, MD, that would work as well.

Thanks so much!!
Rachel

Hi Sheepy, are you going to UofMD? I lived in College Park for a little while, but mostly in the Rockville area. I found a pretty good mechanic that would let me bring my own parts to save me some money. He was located in a back alley sort of place near the Shady Grove metro station which is a bit ofa trek for you. Also, I didn't have a Volvo at the time, so I'm not sure how he'd do on one.

Where's the 500 mile trek to? I used to make the 400 mile trek from DC up to northeast CT pretty regularly - not a fun drive these days as traffic has made it worse and worse.

Good luck.

A very belated reply to you, 99VolvoV70.

Yup, I'm going to UMD and getting my MLS. My trek was to Massachusetts, so a very similar drive! It's loads of fun, especially as you never know if it's going to take 7 hours or 13.

I just noticed this belated reply... I hear ya. My best time was actually around 4 hours back in '99 but I was only going to Southern CT so it was about 350 miles or so (I used to speed very badly). Then I slowed down a bit and it would take around 6 hours to go the 400 miles to NE CT (about 10 minutes from the Mass and RI borders). Then something happened and traffic seemed to get much worse and it started taking 8-10 hours normally. The last few times it was up around 12 or so. Everyone would always say to go the back way - up through rural PA and cut across north of NYC. I tried it once and didn't like it though. I like the convenience of many rest stops. Anyway, hopefully we won't be doing that again for a long time. Good luck in school.
