Question Code P0442 evaporatve emmisions system leak

I just purchased a 2001 S40 with 1.9T. i get an intermittant CEL. I get two codes; P0442 (evaporative emmissions system leak detected) and P0128 (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temp.) Also when starting the engine it takes about 5-10 seconds of cranking before the engine starts. Can antone give me some help on determining exactly what I need to do to solve the starting issue and resolve the code issues. Are the code issues related to each other and/or related to the starting problem?

They are not related.
For the coolant code replace the thermostat and ECT(coolant temp sensor)

For the other code check the gas cap seal.

Thanks Tech, I checked the cap, it looks ok. could the temp sensor cause the starting problem? Could the evaporative emmissions problem cause the starting problem? Are these codes cleared if problem is intermittant? Light seems to only come on at first starts, then stays on for a while ( day or two) Then doesn't appear again for awhile.

The coolant temp sensor can cause the start issue. You might also have a bad fuel pressure regulator. If the ECT is left to long I have seen them make a car idle at 2000 RPM and dangerous to drive.

On the evap leak, it could still be a bad gas cap. Other possibilities are the evap control valve, vapor canister or hose to the canister.

Question Valcum hose leak

I had a valcum leak code aand the Volvo dealer said Gas Cap ,it was replaced The code returned after next fillup, now dealer saysthe J hose is leaking ... They want $329.00 to replace the Little Wee J Hose..
I think it is less expensive to just cancel the code when it appears every so often

Thank you for the post,I first visually checked the cap and saw no issues, after a few days I took emery cloth to the fill neck area where the gas cap seats, and cleaned the gasket on the gas cap with some strong solvent to soften it up. It's been about a month now and I haven't gotten the code. Hope I'm good to go. If it comes back I'll look at the J hose situation.

How about your starting issue and the coolant issue?

Still have the starting issue and still get the temp code about every month. I've decided to change the Therm stat and temp sensor to solve that problem. Just haven't had the time to get into it. If I still have the starting problem after that I will replace the Fuel Pressuer regulator. I'll keep you posted.

With the starting problem, I had this issue and it was a cracked bracket for the crank position sensor, located on the top of the transmission just below the intake piping on the driver's side, right near the junction for the octopus hose and near the heater core hose. The crack caused differing problems in the hot or cold. A visual inspection of the sensor showed it had rubbed on the flywheel. Replace the sensor and bracket, if yours isn't broken, be very very gentle as it is brittle plastic. An impact will break it. There are 2 torx bolts bolting it to the block, t27 if I remember correctly and a 10mm holding the sensor to the bracket.

For the coolant code replace the thermostat and ECT(coolant temp sensor)

For the temp code, get a new temperature sensor. For the evap code get a new gas cap, preferably Volvo branded as the bleed off valve is set to the pressure needed to be seen by the evap pressure test. May be able to get away with just a new seal for the cap.
