Default Painting my valve cover

This 850 I will be putting lots of time into making the underhood look great.

That means, countless hours of detail and stuff.

Now, I want to paint the valve cover wrinkle coat black, followed by painting the spark plug cover white.

How hard is it to get the valve cover off?

Local parts stores can't get in a gasket. Does it use a chemical gasket like the oil pan?

Is this a huge PITA? Or would I be better off masking the outside of the engine and doing the visible parts of the valve cover black?

+1, it would be a major pain to remove the valve cover just to paint it. I would just tape everything off really well and go to it. Also, make sure you use a high temp paint or it will pell over the heat.

I taped everything off and just painted it, really easy and quick. Use an engine paint, Autozone has a variety of colors for that.

Default paint

I use a 6.99 gasket maker with a high temp rating and sensor safe. I counted like 40 bolts to take off...DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLTS...I HAD TO TAP THE DAMN HEAD AND FIT ANOTHER BOLT NOW...

I got it down to 40 minutes

I get a sandwich bag and label it : valve cover 40 count.

another for fuel line clip/bolt

and so on, all bags with the number of bolts.

Need a ten mil socket a long one is better, but have your small one for the bolts above the cam sensor.

LOL you also have to torque to a specific spec or they will be to tight and hold the cam to tight and possibly burn the cam cover up. The bearings are part of the cam cover.

New to the forum and to Volvos (sort of)...

I painted the valve cover on my BMW with wrinkle paint and it came out great. I used Krylon black wrinkle paint and it still looks perfect after 2+ years. I would not recommend using VHT wrinkle paint as the cure time is just too long. The more I read about wrinkle paint, the better I think it is in general. So don't be afraid to use Krylon.
