Power Seat/Shift Lock
Hi everybody. I just bought a '96 850 and was trying to set the memory seats when the back tilt stopped tilting backwards and forwards. It's stuck at the farthest forward position, which makes driving really uncomfortable lol. The motors still sound when I press the tilt buttons, but nothing happens.
Also when I start the car and try putting the car into gear, the stick can't move out of park. I always have to use the shift-lock override button to get it out. Is this a big issue? I don't know much about cars so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Jaya

If you are handy at all look at this post it explains how to fix it.

For the shift lock most likely the micro switch is bad.
You would have to remove the center console and replace the switch.

Thanks, I read the cable repair thread before I posted, but was unsure if that applied. But I guess it does
Will try and work on both the cable repair and the microswitch over the weekend, thanks again for the help!

Microswitch isn't too hard at all, just kind of a pain to see what you are doing. You have to be very careful and look athow it comes out so you put it back in the right way.
Message to TECH, it looks like in your cable repair post, the fix is to shorten the outer cable sheathing. Why is this? Is the end of the inner cable stripped, how does this prevent the cable from getting that far down again and no becoming disconnected?
The cable housing/covering stretches over time. It ends up causing the actual cable ends to be pulled out of their respective little sockets within the motor and transmission. By shortening the sheathing you allow the cable ends to again fit inside their little sockets.
