Default Problem when hot

Hello All,

New here, but have search and searched for an answer for this problem.

Car 95 model 850 SE (Australia)

Car has 320,000 kms on the clock, but has never missed a beat since I owned it for over a year. Went to put gas in it and when I tried to start it again it wouldn't go.

Car starts perfectly first time when cold and drives fine (plenty of power) until the engine starts to reach normal operating temp. I've check the fuel system (pump, filter, and pressure) and there doesn't seem to be a problem. I've checked the computer and its stating no error codes. One thing I had noticed is that after trying and trying to start when hot I see smoke from the dip stick filler. On the very few occasions it has run when at operating temp, I have to very slowly build the revs up to keep it moving. When stationery 99% of the time I can rev the engine with out problem. When it has driven whilst hot, it mis-fires and dies.

Not sure where to start, as I said not one single problem or glitch until I stop the engine at the petrol station.

Additional - I've drained the fuel that I put in and replaced with fresh - just in case bad batch.

Air filter is good.

Thanks in advance for any help....

Fuel pump relay may well be the culprit.

Help me understand the short version... The car starts fine every time when cold, is very hard to start if it is warm?

@rspi - Cheers mate.

Yes, the car will start and drive without problem when the engine is cold.

When the engine is hot (anywhere from 4-5 o'clock to 3 o'clock on the temp gauge) it may take up to 10 minutes or so to start. The engine will crank and crank and may catch (as if combustion has happened) - but not start from time to time.

When it does finally start, I have to drive with a very light right foot, harsh acceleration causes it to splutter and die.

Remember the days of manual choke levers - feels like that been left out!!

Have you checked the vacuum lines at the icv tree? If there is no torn elbows there, follow those vacuum lines to make sure all of them are good. If you can not find any vacuum leaks, maybe you have a bad icv.

Red face

Sorry for the late reply, just got round to checking all the hoses today, couldn't find any leaks. What I have found is that the problem goes away if I disconnect the vacuum hose that goes from the front of the throttle body to a sensor that is prositioned just above the radiator. This gives me a rough idle, but car will start and run when hot- what is this sensor?

Thanks for putting me in the right direction. Cheers ij

Why don't you post a pic of what you're talking about? Am thinking maybe EGR or EVAP controls?
