Default questions on 850 maintence

Hi i just bought and 850 with 144,000 and according to carfax, was serviced at a volvo dealer every 5000 miles until 130,000. There are a few minor electrical problems but the engine runs strong and starts up with no problems. One of the wheels makes some noise(wheel bearing maybe?) but not too much. The service light comes on for the first few minutes i drivethen turns off.I want to make sure everything is good, so what maintence and tune ups should i get done? and also is 91 octane required or can i put 89? thanks.

Weston, just use the premium gas, and get good clean oil in it. Then before you get all excited and pee your pants, go and confirm when the last timing belt change was done...this one simple thing can ruin your engine...after you have confirmed when it will need to be done then move ahead...to the basic stuff

What year is your 850? Some years have the manual diagnostics and some have the OB-II port. 93 - 95 has the manual info (I cannot think of what this is called, but you can read the led light for codes and look them up on a chart).

Im fairly certain that the 93 - 95 850s have this dual port under the hood that is used for onboard diagnostics.

http://volvospeed.com/maintence.htmhas a list of codes, how to retreive them and how to clear them.

By the way [sm=welcomesign.gif]to the forum.

Tell us what you find.

thanks for the replies. its a 1997 glt. It didnt have an owners manual, but i ordered one off ebay that should be here in a few days. I was also going to buy the Haynes Repair Manual for the 850's and see what i can find out. Im only 16 and im pretty new to working on cars but from what i read, you save lots of$$$ my doing self repairs.

And according to the person we bought it from the timing belt was changed last year, but he also said the odometer(which reads 95,856) only went out a few days ago, even though the inspection sticker and carfax say 144,000. Me and my dad are going to a volvo mechanic to see what maintence was done and what needs to be done. Would you suggest going to an authorized volvo dealer or an independent swedish car mechanic to get the car checked out? Ive heard going to the dealer can get pretty expensive.

Is there a website or anything to find volvo specialists in my area, or are the Volvo dealers specialists?

You most certainly can save some coin by doing as many repairs as you can yourself. And your young so a couple of skinned knuckles will add character. LOL.

Being a 97, the pic that I posted wont really help you as youll need an OBDll code reader and the port for that is located under the coin slot in front of your shifter.

If you have a laptop then there are connectors and software that you can but so that you can perform all sorts of tests and clear all types of codes.

Im having, not by choice, a few issues with The Anvil, but things are starting to come around.

Keep us informed and ask questions as this is one of the, if not the best, places for assistance and support.
