Default quick question

ok so i sold my toyota and am looking for a 850 or a v70 turbo, and i found a 850 t5 that has has alot of recent work done including heads full tune up and more. And well i guess it just needs a little work. He said the volvo mechanic stated it needs a new turbo soon. The owner also states that it smokes sometimes but its most likly just the precipitation from the cold oregon weather it usually goes away when warm. all in all i was wondering if it would be a good deal to just put on another turbo or just go for one around the 3000 dollar range that is fine? here's exactly what he says:
my son dont want this car, leather tan int, tint windows, pioneer cd detach, allow wheels, clear title, over 185,000 miles, smokes sometimes , took to shop 8months ago and had two heads replaced,3months ago new fuel pump.new fuel filter, new plugs and wires, new router and distributor cap, 2months ago new $280 alternator, the shop said turbos are going out, i dont have money to fix and my hours at work have gone dow

that's a pretty good price and it seems to be in really good shape. Are you able to do work yourself on it or would you have to take it to a dealer? If it's going to need some work and you can't do it yourself, that's going to offset the fact that it's so cheap. Turbos are fairly inexpensive, especially 15Gs. The smoking could be condensation I guess, but if it's not it maybe something expensive. I guess if the turbo is worn out, that may cause smoking.

yeah i was planning on doing everything myself if it wasn't too hard. I rebuilt a 22re and put it in and did everything myself exhaust work is usually easy. and if its just unbolt and go then it wouldn't be too hard. and if i couldn't would you know the for someone to put in a turbo? around 600? more?

I don't know how much it would cost, personally, I wouldn't pay someone to swap turbos because I think it's really easy, but if you have no idea what your doing, then you would have to. Used 15Gs for the 850s are usually around 200 shipped. Have you driven the car yet?

Bad turbo will definitely cause smoking. The other thing that could be causing the smoke is the PCV system.

what's smoking in the first place? The exhaust or is it coming from somewhere else?

A $3,000 850 needs to be nice and CLEAN! Sounds like it's in good condition. I guess with that maintenance recently done, it raises the ante. How many miles on the 850? Like Gilbert said, you can find 15t turbos on line all over fairly inexpensive so that shouldn't be a big deal....

Yeah actually they sold it before I could get to it but currently I am looking at a 94 for 850 t wagon or a 96 t5 wagon. The 94 has 25k less miles and is 200 cheaper
