Default Remove Dash Top?

95 850 wagon: With airbags, Is it safe to remove the top of the dashboard? If I disconnect the battery will I eliminate any risk of deploying the airbag? I’ve never owned a car with an airbag before.

Thanks in advance!! Dave

the standard rule of airbags is always act like it's going to deploy at any time, kinda the same way you always treat a firearm as if it were loaded

with the power disconnected, wait about 20 minutes before disconnecting the airbag clips, as the SRS system has a capacitor in case the battery is taken out in a collision.

I had to take the dash off to install an alarm system, and after I was done, it threw the airbag code for passenger airbag, on the 95 you can clear that yourself, so don't worry about that.
you shouldn't get that code if you don't reconnect the battery without the airbag on, just depends on what you're doing
you should be able to find all the info you need here http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/ser...aintSystem.pdf
that's the official volvo service manual for the 850 airbag system, error code information for the SRS system starts on page 20

I never disconnected the battery when I took my dash cover off, I just unplugged the passenger side airbag after I pulled the glove box out. The plug is in roughly the center of the glove box opening and it's right there on the bottom of the airbag module.

ibi- My third reply to your posts! That sounds simple, do I need to just plug it back in when I'm done or do I need to clear that airbag code? Thanks again! Dave

i never got a code for the airbag. I would assume that you can just clear it, but lets wait for someone else to chime in first.

I just replaced that airbag last night -- it is best if you disconnect the battery first, then unclip the connector like Ibified explained. Never disconnect the gold-plated connector at the Module (under the arm-rest), always the pigtails.
