Default Rolled - Salvage value?

Hi,

My daughter rolled her '97 850 the other night. It rolled at least 4 times and the airbags didn't go off. It landed on its wheels, with the engine still running. I haven't seen it yet, but the doors, roof and trunk are all wrecked. It has/had 180+k miles on it.

Anyone know what it might be worth for salvage? Where might I look for someone to buy it? The car is in Duluth, MN right now, but will likely be trailered to Grand Rapids, MN this weekend.

Thank God it was a Volvo. She and her 4 friends all survived (with various injuries).

Depends on the Severity of the damage! Technically it's not a salvage, since it doesn't have a "Salvage Title" issued on it. I have seened vehicles at an Insurance Auction aka Salvage auction that are that year that have been rolled for a few hundred dollars. Is it that bad? If you decide to get rid of it, I might suggest sell it for parts,or maybe if the car frame isn't bent and all the lines match up get doors off another car,etc... that is if you want to keep it. Personally if you have to sell it, part it out... U might get more for it. Good Luck with what ever you end up doing!

Default Why we should all drive Volvos

Just got pictures. Can you believe this car rolled 4 times? Amazing... She was ejected out the drivers window. Everyone else stayed in the car.

She had a concussion and one of her passengers had a broken collar bone and broken ribs. She called saying she was in an accident and woke up outside of the car. "What should I do?" Not a call anyone wants to get. She took the pictures, so she's going to be fine. I think there's a lot of snow on the ground, so that must have helped. I don't know. It's amazing to me.

So glad to hear your daughter is fine. Hard to believe that car rolled over four times. That's one of the reason why all three of my kids and their spouses, me, my wife and my mother in law all drive Volvos.

I like HONDA.Owned a few and worked for them too... Great cars, though a little cheap on the plastics, but I LOVE my VOLVO....

Hey dkooda, so r u really going to get rid of the Volvo... Doesn't look that bad from pics. but I guess from my viewpoint I can't see what's bent or broken...

Hi,

It's supposed to go to a body shop tonight to see how the frame looks. Then to a mechanic to see about the exhaust system (something broke during the accident). It needs doors and glass for sure (all around, I think). She said someone offered $750, but they hadn't even seen it yet. That seems like a pretty good price after what it's been through. Guess we'll see in a few days.

We had another 850 picked our for her, but it needs a new timing belt (I actually found that out by tracking down the dealership that worked on it) and exhaust system. Puts us over our budget. The OEM CAT is really expensive! Not sure I want to put some universal thing on there.

What does that mean: It needs a timing belt? If it broke and needs a new one, it needs more than a timing belt. If it's just time for one that's a totally different story.

I would probably take the $750 for the wrecked one unless you are going to do a good bit of the work yourself to fix it back up. Having the work done in a body shop will cost a fortune unless you can find somebody to do it on the side or see if you can find a school teaching auto body repair and see if they would take it as a project.

The 850 we were looking at had the belt replaced at 69000 miles. The dealer said it's a 70k belt, so it's due again in about 4k miles. With the belt, the exhaust (even with a universal CAT), new tires and brakes within a year, it just puts us over budget. The search continues...

Where you located? I sure wish people would put their location in their profiles. My daughter is looking to sell her 95 850 Turbo wagon. It's in good shape, but not great. She wants a Minny Van (God I hate that term) for the two little ones. Probably going to sell for around $2500. It's the same color as my 98 V70, but it has the charcoal interior.

Sorry, I haven't filled out my profile yet. We're in Minneapolis. Not sure she'd go for a wagon. But since I'm paying for it, I guess it's not really up to her.

Yeah, we went the mini-van route for a while, but now we like to squeeze them into the back of my S40 or my wife's Pilot (3 girls). The van was nice because of all the space, but there wasn't much to it (in terms of protection).

Honestly you would not want to make a trip this far for my daughter's car. I think $2500 would be a good price for it locally, but you should be able to find just as good a car closer for the same money. You might even want to pay a little more for one in better shape.
