Cool Buckles Are The same! Are seatbelts different between 850 sedans???

I found a guy that sells "universal" seatbelt extenders that supposably fits only 3 850s:
1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan 4-Door2.3L 2319CC l5 GAS DOHC Turbocharged
1994 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon 4-Door2.3L 2319CC l5 GAS DOHC Turbocharged
1993 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan 4-Door2.4L 2435CC l5 GAS DOHC Naturally Aspirated

I own a 1995 Volvo 850 Sedan non turbo and described via the Autocheck vin search as a Base/GLT 4D sedan with a 2.4L I5 MPI engine. How different can a seatbelt be on a 1995 turbo sedan or a 1993 GLT sedan vs my 1995 Base/GLT sedan??

I've owned more 240's, and most parts are interchangeable with the early pre 1989 244s and most parts are interchangeable with the 1989-1993 240s.

This is my first 850, but seriously, I find it hard to believe Volvo would make different seatbelts for sedans from different years?

Anybody here know if there is really a different seatbelt buckles on the 850 sedans?

Thanks
old lady way too cranky from these tight seatbelts!!!

Default Yikes

Swedish Auto Parts lists 4 variations of buckle latches dependent of VIN numbers. Considering the fact these were made for about 4 years only, it certainly seems odd Volvo factories wouldn't be using the same parts for sedans and wagons.

By way of my serial #238446, I need an extender compatible with parts 9136184 (driver) and 9136185 (passenger) but still have no idea if the latch component ...the hole...the receptacle....is any different from alternate 9167651 and 9167652 latches for higher serial numbers. Are the latches actually different or perhaps just the attachment components are different.

It's all beyond me. Guess I'll call my zen Volvo Only guys on Monday and see if they know if a universal seatbelt extender that works on a 1993 non turbo sedan and a 1995 turbo sedan would fit mine.

Thanks for looking...guess this question is a dead end!

I don't scare easily, but I would be pretty fearful of the idea that a seat belt extender is universal. Seat belts vary a lot, within reason. If somebody said it was tested and worked okay on my car, then sure, I'd be willing to buy one and convince myself it was okay.

I never noticed any difference from one 850 latch to another, but I wasn't ever looking for that. In the process of taking in a wreck or two, I noticed that some 850's had explosive crash tensioners in the seat belts and I wonder if maybe those were revised or maybe lumped in with optional SIPS airbags. Even if they were, the latches might be the same.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. Yes, I saw those explosive tensioners on a video. Way up in the retractor, not near the latch, right?

Still seems that the latch wouldn't be different between a 1993 GLT sedan and a 1995 turbo sedan verses my 1995 GLT sedan. Maybe the wiring, maybe the airbag location, but why change the buckle?

That's why I'd think an extender would be better then a whole seatbelt replacement. The 850 is notorious for having squinky seatbelts and replacing it would be another 850 squinky seatbelt is not going to help. Unless there is a longer rigid receptacle made for the 850, my only hope is to add a rigid receptor extender.

I ain't completely gigantic but add a coat or full pockets and a right hand still recovering from surgery and these seatbelts become a pain. Literally. And I have often just left it unlocked. So I'd rather have an extender they claim is safety tested as it's gotta be better then an unlatched seatbelt!

Thanks again!

Smile FYI Volvo Only Boyz sez buckle no dif between 850 models

An 850 seatbelt buckle is an 850 seatbelt buckle, regardless of year or engine or airbag. The difference is the attachment sites and wiring.

He also says there's probably a retraction problem with mine rather then a lack of belt length so at least I can be assured that despite my weight staying the same, I am NOT expanding like a balloon!

Mark this as answered! Thanks for looking!

That's good to know! You are correct, the tensioning part is in the side of the car. I had a 1995 GLE also, but I don't know that it actually had the tensioners, as I never wrecked it.

Hope you don't wreck anything just to find tensioners!

Yes, it's often best for me to just call the Volvo Only Boyz but thought it might be common knowledge y'all would know over the weekend.

Thanks
