Default service engine light after start-up

This just started happending yesterday.... When I start the car ('93 850 GLT, manual transmission), the service engine light (it's yellow) stays on. After a mile or two of driving, it shuts off. It stays onwhether the car is warm or cold. I haven't checked the codes yet. My plan was to start the car (light should stay on) and before it turns off, shut the car off and pull the codes, hopefully, something will be set to give me a clue.

Any other ideas. Is there a common failure I need to check for?

Service light is a meaningless light.

The service light is designed to come on to remind you the vehicle needs servicing - then goes off after a short period.

You can either cancel the service light yourself - or take the vehicle to be serviced and the garage will cancel the service light for you.

Yep, what everyone else said. I believe the light comes on after 7500 miles or 1 year after the last time it was reset, whichever comes first!

It's a game: See how far you can get before the light goes off. When I had my instrument cluster out to fix the oddometer on the white car I took that bulb out permanently. On the 93-95 you can reset the light yourself.

Here is how:

The 1993 has OBDI
You will have to use the OBDI port under the hood by the washer fluid fill.
Put the wire in the A7 port
then press the button 4 times and wait for the light to light up
then push once and wait for it to light up
then 5 more times then wait for it to light up
then 1 more time then it should flash fast and then it should be reset
Again it is 4-1-5-1

Let us know if this works, it should. I've done it on my 95.
