How can you change the shifter?, I have a 95 850 turbo station wagon and I would like to change the shifter, it's not in very bad shape, but if it's not too much trouble I would like to change it, thanks...

Pull the retaining ring down that's below the shift ****. You'll see two plastic tabs at the base of the shifter - one on the front and the other on the back. Push the tabs in simultaneously and pull up HARD with both hands. Try to get as much leverage as you can when you do this. It takes a considerable amount of force but that's the procedure.

Not really any need to push the tabs at the bottom. Just grab the top and pull like He**.

Also an easy way to undo the clip in the boot is to turn it and pull down.

Good tip. Would've made it a lot easier without holding the tabs! Also, I wound up breaking the retaining ring when I removed it. It just snapped when I pulled it down and cost about $5 to replace. I guess I wasn't gentle enough with it...

Is it the same procedure with a manual shifter?

Either turn it like a screw or pull really hard.. I dont know how the volvo is, but they were attached both ways. If the base of it is square you probably have to pull.

I hate it when that happens, I think everyone has been in a similar situation. If our "gentle" isn't enough, maybe grandma could do it for us.

Do you have to pull up on the shift lever release or just pull the entire ****?

Never seen an aftermarket one on a 850. Just the stock ones.

Just pull up on the ****.
