Default Some center console lights out

I have been reading on your site for a while and I had a few questions in the brain for a while.. I figured I would dump them here.

I was wondering if I could get some insight on the lights on the center console. The gear shift light does not light up along with a few other things. Is there a few bulbs in the console or are certain things connected. I figured I would ask before I start taking things apart.

Hello again,

A moderator Mr. Tech has a good instruction as to how to go about removing the ctr console:

https://volvoforums.com/m_15475/tm.htm

It's actually on the top page, so you can't miss it.

There are individual light bulbs for the shifter, as well as other illuminations. Haynes' manual also has a procedure. The bulbs for the shifter are one-piece unit (bulb + holder) and must be replaced as a unit (IAW Haynes).

The bulbs may be out, or the contacts are loose. If tapping/hitting it doesn't make them light, then the new bulbs are required. I haven't seen those bulbs at on-line vendors, so you may have to go to the dealer ($$$). If they light after tapping, the contacts are loose so you may have to bend the tangs to make them fit tighter.

Good luck.

I replaced all the switch lights and the shifter light in my son's 95 850. The bulbs and sockets are available at the dealer but are expensive. I was able to get close (not exact) replacement bulbs at Radio Shack for about $2 a bulb. THe bulb comes out of the holder and can be replaced. It takes a bit of work, but if you are the least bit mechanically inclined, it will be easy. The hardest part was getting the console out to get to the bulb in the first place, and that is only becasue it is a bit awkward to remove.

THe ones I got from Radio Shack were their 12V micro lamp. Radio Shack type 7219, P/N 272-1092C. A 2 pack was about $1.79

They are a bit smaller than the stock lamp, but they work fine.

Hope this helps,

Glenn
