It will also help if you look at the sticker under the hood and get the engine #'S
Look for a number Like 5244t or something like that.

We should be able to tell which turbo from there Hopefully.

On the white sticker that is on the hood look for the number like I posted above.I think it is in the engine family on the sticker.

That doesn't sound all that bad.

To bad you couldn't find a turbo out of a 850R!!!

Sorry to bud in on this conversation but what is the difference, and would I have to get the old 94' 850 turbo wagon's computer reprogramed?
I'm lossing power and can't figure from where? I smell oil burning and its coming from the turbo return line. I think it is the return line.
It is the hose that goes from the turbo to the front of the motor. the joint by the intake is leaking oil and it must be dripping somewhere hot.
What do you think?
Thank you in advance, Notta...

154,000 miles with the original turbo. Just F.Y.I.

MY94-96 850 Turbo is VIN 57 and has TD04HL-15G turbo
MY97 850 Turbo is VIN 57 and has TD04HL-15G turbo
MY95 850 T5R is VIN 58 and has TD04HL-15G turbo
MY97 850 R is VIN 58 and has TD04HL-15G turbo

However, the MY94-95 turbo flange to downpipe is conical shaped. The MY96-97 is straight.

-----------------------------------------
When oil changes are done within proper intervals, our turbo(s) easily last over 200K miles.

If you suspect that your turbo has a problem...

Remove the intercooler pipe between turbo and intercooler. Do you see a thick oil film inside of pipe?

Remove the turbo inlet hose between air filter box and turbo. Do you see oil puddled inside of turbo housing? Firmly pull on turbo compressor wheel. Is there a lot of slop and play in the turbo shaft?

Have your current turbo rebuilt professionally. It shouldn't cost much more than $300. Remember to purchase and install a new turbo oil feed line.

And one other thing... For the price of a rebuilt, your existing turbo housing can be over-bored for a larger compressor wheel, such as -15G, -16G, -16T, or -17C.

Shop and compare...

Hello Andre,

Greetings from Chicagoland.

Turbo return line does leak from the seal. Take a look at Bay-13 at Volvospeed.com for info & procedure:

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/turborepairline.php

This is one of the lines that is notorious for oil leak. A rubber seal on the engine block gets tired and starts leaking. If this is the case, make sure to install new seal ring, as well as a new gasket that attaches to the bottom of the turbo. For the seal ring, I put some oil-resistant high-temp liquid gasket material on the ring and the flange on the pipe and it worked very well. This procedure is easy, but you need to lift the front of the vehicle, and if you decide to do it yourself, make sure to use ramp/jack stands for your safety.

If it's leaking from the oil cooler hose that attaches to the intercooler (Pax (right) side), you may need a new hose assembly or just new seal ring + O-ring + may be a new retainer as well (old retainer can actually be recycled, by pinching it with regular hose clamp). If the hose is leaking from the seam where it is crimped to metal tube, then you need a new hose assembly. If it's leaking from the connection to the intercooler, you only need the seal ring & O-ring.

Slight leak on the bottom of the turbo is normal, even a Volvo dealer tech told me that it's normal and there is not much they can do.

Best wishes,

JPN

Hello Katrina,

Greetings from Chicagoland.

It may be too late to reply by now, but as for the engine ID, it is on the timing belt cover (the black plastic cover attached on the passenger-side of the engine). As Mr. Tech noted, it starts with an alphabet, then followed by 4 digits, then "T" if the engine is turbocharged. I drive 1994 850 Turbo T5 and my engine is B5234T.

Best wishes,

JPN
