Default Spare Key For 1993 850 Glt, best way to get one?

Hi Folks,

Bear with me - I'm new here. ;-)

I just picked up an 1993 850 GLT. The dealer I bought the car from gave me only one key, which opens everything - door locks, trunk, fits ignition, glove box.

The car also came with what appears to be an aftermarket remote ignition/lock system. Everything works great.

Question: What is the least expensive way to get a duplicate made of this key? Is there something special about this key that a regular locksmith can't make me a copy? It doesn't appear to have any chip or electronics in it and it looks old, like original. The manual says something about "As an added theft measure, new keys have been developed which may take long to copy" Are they talking about my key or...?

Thanks in advance!

Len

Nothing special about the key. Any locksmith business will be able to cut.

Hopefully you can find a locksmith that can cut one. All the ones I went to said our keys were laser cut internal type keys. I ended up having to go to the dealer with the VIN, and registration to get a key cut.

Yours is a laser cut key.
Locksmiths are limited on cutting them.
It might not be as bad now but most of them didn't want to buy the equipment to cut them.

Okay, gotcha. Thanks for the info. I'll do some snooping this week and see what I find. Any idea on how expensive it would be to get the key done at a dealer, or do people avoid that because it's expensive. Cheers!

I can't remember exactly, but I believe it was around $45-$50. They will probably ask you for the VIN and some form of proof of ownership of the car if you go to the dealer.

I'd like to know that too! ;i

VOLVO Dealers here in Canada quoted me anywhere from $45 plus taxes and mail fees to $ 80. My understanding is that they dont even need the original - they just take your VIN and proof of ownership and get it straight from Volvo(?) in Toronto up here. Nowfor2 keys that's getting a little pricey,I may have to just suck it up out here and go that route I guess eh? Got me by the chungs on this one. So far, I havent had any luck finding any locksmith that would cut it. Darn...

And the verdict is $ 42.00 bones CDN.

Every Volvo dealership I contacted from coast to coast here in Canada quoted me this price, so it seems pretty standard. I haven't found a single locksmith in Winnipeg anyway that was able to cut it (or even willing to get back to me) so I guess that's the bottom line if you're living in these here parts and own a Volvo and want another key.

Could be worse - I could lock myself out without any spare at all. Now how much would THAT cost zoinks?!?!

Thanks for the info guys. Keep me posted if you're in my part of the world and come across a cheaper way to get spare keys. Ciao!

My daughters 95' 850 turbo had only one key with it, and it was the valet key. The dealer wanted $45 for a key, and the local locksmith said it took a special machine to cut it which he did not have, but was nice enough to refer me to another locksmith that did have one. It was about $12, and he was able to make the proper key from the valet key. He said the valet key was missing a certain groove that the other key had. The valet key will not open the trunk.

Now there's something I didn't know, thanx for the info. I could care less right now if my spare did or didn't open the trunk. Maybe there's hope still hahahah! ;-)

The center groove on the side of the key is what makes it a valet or master.
One of them is a square cut and the other is an angle cut in the groove.
