Default SRS troubleshooting

the SRS light in my '93 850 is on...

I checked the codes: 2-1-2 - open circuit on driver's side airbag

I can't reset it, which leads me to believe it's a real problem and it's not intermittent.

The question is, are there any good resources to help with trouble shooting? Basically, where do I begin? Any common failure points to check first?

I will tell you what it usually is.
1.Bad SRS contact reel. The plastic piece behind the steering wheel.
2.Bad Air bag.

So the "contact reel" sounds like, remove airbag, remove wheel and that is the piece that lets the wheel rotate and still maintain electrical contact. (assuming it's not the airbag itself)...

You are correct.
The plastic holding it to the column is very brittle when old. The mounting tabs will break and it will try to turnwith the wheel and end up breaking it internally.

If you remove the black covers usually you will see the clear plastic broke.

ALSO note: Mark the steering wheel before removing it.

is the part expensive? should I get one before I tear into it, or should I tear into it first and then have the car undriveable while I get the part after I verify that is the problem? (not a huge issue...)

No matter how much you spend for the part you will have to go to the dealer to have the SRS light reset. When and independent guy did my evaporator he also found the problem causing my SRS light to come on. When he put it back togehter, he had to take it to the dealer and spend $117 just to have them reset the light. He has almost every possible diagnostic piece of equipment too, but not that one.

the part is almost $200 from the volvo dealer.... I'll take it apart, make sure the reel looks bad and then order one. It will only take a day to get the part, so that won't be bad...

You should be able to Ohm it and tell if it is good or not.

That might be what you need.
That is the SRS contact reel.
