Default Starter went out and just replaced it now grinding noise!?

So my Starter went out and i just replaced it with a starter from a 96 850r parts car. now grinding noise and no start!?! Is this other starter bad? Or are they not compatible starters? (I have a 850 t5r)
Is it safe to keep cranking it even though I hear the grinding noise?
I'm afraid of grinding gears but I don't think any bolts that hold the starter in place are in the transmission housing.... So I think I'm safe.
Hellllpp Tech! Someone!

Mine just stopped cranking. I've never heard a starter grind like this.... Is this even normal for a starter to do so?

A guy in the S70 section just had a starter issue that was connected to his AC compressor locking up. Try to see if you can turn the crank by hand. You can also remove the serpentine belt and see if the car will start with that off.

Your used replacement starter shouldn't make any more noise than the original starter did when it was working properly.
There should be no grinding and if you have any I can't see how you think "I'm safe" ?? Something is wrong and it might be doing damage.

This is what I found for interchanges so your parts car starter should fit and spin the engine properly unless it's faulty or you didn't install it correctly or something fell where it shouldn't. I'd pull the belt so you know something else isn't causing the noise like the Alt, P.S. pump or AC compressor but if it's still there you need to find out what it is before it makes itself a new problem.

When you say it doesn't start, does it spin but not fire or is it turning too slow to start ??
