Default Replaced brake pads...BAD grinding noise now

Hi folks.

I replaced the front brake pads on my 2001 S40 today with Duralast brand from Autozone. I've done brake work before with no problems - this is the first time on an S40. I get a HORRIBLE grinding noise now.....bad enough that I don't want to drive the car. Did I do something wrong (which doesn't seem likely since the procedure is pretty simple from VADIS) or is it the pads? The rotors were slightly grooved, but don't appear to be bad.

Help!!!

Hello Jabbo,

Don't be embarrassed, we all do something silly once a while.

As for the parts, I personally would not buy them at AutoZone, except for generic consumables such as fluids & light bulbs for Volvos. Volvos are really sensitive to the quality of parts and they generally don't like to be treated with non-OEM parts.

FCP Groton of Connecticut has been popular among some of the members in the 850 forum:

The selections for S40 are somewhat limited, but if enough customers buy parts for S40, they would add more parts.

I wish you luck & safety.

I wondered if anyone would call me out on this[sm=bustedsign.gif]

Yeah I put one in backwards...steel on steel makes a really sweet sound if it's a slide on a guitar....ain't nothing sweet about the sound of a brake pad backplate on a rotor.

I bought OEM pads and did it right the second time. Live and learn....kinda like years ago what I learned about the importance of putting the emergency brake on when you have a car jacked up. The key is to not pay alot for stupid mistakes - so far I've been lucky.
