Hi All.

There are numerous resources on this forum all excellent btw. My specfic problems include my car not starting.

Before I would try and crank and there was no thing or it would take about 5-10 mins to start. I unplugged the battery for a while and tried again and it started. I got out to lock the door and it wouldn't crank. Any suggestions to get her running again.

Battery is good.

Not sure about starter

Not sure about fuel pump

Some diagnostic help would be great.

are you sure your battery is good?check for fuel pressure and make sure you are getting the right pressure then you move from there. this is a diy.

 

Cool. I can't get the auto to start. Can i do this without starting?

 

you dont have to start the car. just get a gauge as described in the video, hook it up to the fuel rail, turn on the ignition, DONOT start the car. just turn the key to the III position and get the reading. the gauge should read 39-45 psi. here is a link. you can get it from any autostore, you can return it after using it if you want to.

 

you need four things to get a car start. fuel, air, spark and compression. just have to troubleshoot one after the other.

 

I think the pressure is low, I checked the fuel rail and I barely get any fuel release at all, jjust drips. Would this be a sign of low pressure?

 

Just to add I spayed starter fluid in the intake and nonthing.

 

Battery is brand new also.

 

yea pressure is probably very low. it should gush out real hard when the rail is pressed. but a gauge will give you an accurate measure on the pressure. turn on ignition and try pressing on the rail again and see if it gushes out. also turn the key to position III and check for humming sound at the trunk. make sure the fuel pump is working

 

I didn't get Any type of fuel from the rail. I also dropped the cap. Idiot. So new fuel pump or the electrical fuel component under the fuel box?

 

I could not hear a fuel pump for the trunk area. I even opened the trunk and could not hear anything.

 

why dont you get a fuel pressure gauge and read the pressure? just to be sure its either your fuel pump or your fuel pump relay.it shouldnt cost that much at autoparts store. you can return it anyways

 

When you listened for the fuel pump was it right when you turned the key to "on/run" ? The system only runs for a couple seconds to pressurize the fuel rail and them shuts down. If you turned it on and them walked back to the trunk it would have run and shut down normally by then.

Have you checked for spark yet ??

IMHO ... From your description I'd check for spark before you start trying to point to the fuel pump or fuel pump relay.

 

Check for spark:

1. Take the cover off the top of the motor.
2. Pull one spark plug.
3. Connect the plug back into the wire and place it very close to one of the bolts on the motor.
4. Have someone try to start the car and see if the spark plug gives off a spark.

Report back.

Still haven't gotten the tools to take the top off. Horrible rain and kinda killed my weekend to do any type work on the automobile. Sadly. I'll report back when I do test for the spark.

May must be Volvo not starting month! same problem with my 94 N/A drove home from work Friday car sat all weekend went to start Monday and I get it to crank and wanting to start but no fire! So far I have have check for spark, timing belt, timing, fuel pump relay and test the camshaft position sensor and from what I could tell was reading .3v instead of .5v with my cheap multimeter. So I assume that is where my problem lies either that or not enough fuel pressure.

 

Ok I didnt really think about this much before. The 850 ran fine Friday no issues and Monday no start, just engine cranking would I get any DTCs from the computer?

 

Update.

I could not locate the tools to take the engine cap off. So sadly I took it to a mechanic. I also heard about a flywheel issue not engaging the starter. Any idea if this is a problem that would cause these type is issues?
