Stupid Question

I know this probably seems stupid but I couldn't find it in my Haynes manual or online.

But what is this hose (highlighted in red)?

Preheat hose to warm up the intake air temp......

Preheat for intake air? I thought cooler air was more efficient/powerful.

It only works when the car is cold it helps the motor get to normal operating temp faster.
