Question Swapping the ECM in my 850 T5

Does anybody know if it is possible to install the ECM from a '96 T5R into a '96 T5?

It is my understanding that the primary difference is the programming in the ECM, but that the engines are essentially the same.

Am I correct or am I woefully mistaken?
