you say the torque converter is bolted to the flywheel, but do you remember if the splined shaft that comes out of the trans and mates to the converter was all present and correct.

Not sure on Volvo's as I am still new to these vehicles (only had mine for a couple of weeks), but this very thing almost happened on my Ford

Are the axles snapped in all the way?
Does the speedo work?

im sure that the axles are in and the shaft for the torque converter is in its right groove but when i put it in reverse or drive it doesnt budge but it did move two feet right after the first start then that was it
but it still goes in park
no noises at all from the transmission areaa
can a torque converter just go bad like that
is there a special way to fill up the transmission
from dry or near empty
i never drained no fluids out of the converter so i dont know whats going on

speedo doesnt work because the wires somehow hot cut somewhere in the motion of driving and i posted a thread asking what colors the wires where so i could see if i could rerwire them but never got an answer on the colors

You need to fill it with it running after the initial fill up through the dipstick tube.
The fluid level is full now with it running?

Maybe the tranny was bad that you bought.

You sure you hooked up the linkage correctly? As in is there any resistance at all when you bring the car down to R or even D from Park? Only thing I can personally think of myself. Could be something as small as a small wire you forgot to hook back up.

I'm not sure that a wire missing could be the cause.

Did I read a few posts back that the car did move slightly at first, I have a hard understanding your text - That being said and this maybe a dumb question but did you check where the shifter linkage attaches to the trans. If the shifter ain't hooked up, it might be in "N" and not coming going into a gear.

Other than that check your fluid level again, it takes a good amount to fill a converter

never took the tranny out just pulled the motor out never even touched the torque converter
but this time i drained the tranny
when i put the motor back in i filled the TC and made sure it clicked in
put the motor in bolted the motor to tranny and screwwed the fly wheel to the TC and filled it up started it and topped it off
it goes in park never touched none of the levers..
put it through all gears and you dont even feel it kick in at all
it like its in nuetral for all gears
but never touched the shifter or anything with the tranny except the fluid
and yes after first start up it went into reverse let it go back 2 feet then put it in park and never went back into any gears after that..
converter is filled
is this signs of a broken or bad converter?

Any error lights on the dash? Any error codes set in the TCU?

My trans acted very strange one time; similar to your experience. Turned out to be the Econ/Sport in an indeterminate position. But I think the up-arrow light was on...

Not sure if the TC is bad. If it was working before and you didn't mess with it, it seems unlikely that it would be broken now

If the fluid level is where it should be and the shift linkage is functioning correctly, you may have to start taking the trans out to diagnose the issue

You mentioned some cut wires in a post up somewhere and wonder if some of those wires are part of the shifter solenoids.
Why dont you check another car for those wires and copy the colours?
