Tachometer Wiring

that looks pretty complicated... is there a sensor on the motor that it gets the signal from, or is it a coil wire, or what?
and are there any things other than wiring that would cause it to go in and out of working?
it seems like it mostly works when it has been sitting for a short period of time, and the engine is cool, then after about 20-40 minutes of driving it usually goes out, sometimes it will come back on, but usually stays out until i park it again.
and when it is out, if i revv the engine to around 3K rpm's, the tach will jump way up to about 4.5K and then when i throttle down it will go right back to zero.
