taper player makes words fade
I would try a head cleaner tape as a cheap trial. Or, you could spray contact cleaner on the inside the volume **** and play with fade & balance control.
Ifit doesn't solve it and if you can afford a new unit, I may consider a new unit.

It might be build-up on the head unit. Cassette tape dragging across the head unit leaves a residue that builds up over a long time. This buildup affects the high frequencies first. It may be that the head itself has finally given in after so many years, but if you haven't been cleaning it regularly, then I'll bet you see improvement with a high quality head cleaner, preferably one that not only uses a cleaning agent but also has the ability to help demagnetize the head. You can usuallyfind a good quality cleaner at a stereo shop for $20. Don't cheap out and buy the $7.98 special and don't use one of those "dry" cleaning cassettes because they don't work.
I forgot to mention that one, yes the demagnetiser liquid kit that comes with Q-tips and you physically clean the head with the wet Q-tip. The kit may come with 2 different liquid bottles.
