Thinking About Selling My Yellow T5R
 

It runs great and I'm not having any problems with it. It has 215K on it, so it needs the Timing Belt and I am going to do the Water Pump with this change also.

Problem is I'm just not up to working on it myself any longer and the local Independent shop wants about $1050 to do the work. I've done it myself before on another R I owned, but I just don't feel like doing the work again. I'm 64 years old and just don't like pulling myself up off the floor any longer.

I know I'll be sorry if I sell it. I think I need somebody to talk me out of it.

They want how much to do a timing belt and water pump? Unless the timing belt on the turbos is way more complicated than my N/A was, that's gotta come out to a pretty crazy hourly rate.

They use only all OEM parts and I think their rate is $100 an hour. I don't think changing the TB is any different on NA vs Turbo.

Is this to change the timing belt, tensioners, pulleys, serpentine, oil change, and water pump?

That price include P&L?

My local Volvo dealer quoted me around $850 for my yellow. That's at $105 hourly rate. Did not ask for break down of parts though.

Don't sell. Like you said you will regret it right away. And would you ever go buy one again in the future? I have always thought about it on random occasions but like you said would regret it as soon as I took the money.

If you are selling I am interested. But again don't sell. I wouldn't.

I'll come and do the job for you. My travel cost will be $785. That will include 2 nights in a hotel, gas, meals for me and my wife and you can get good parts from FCP, iPD or the dealer. It will come out to about the same but you'll have the pleasure of knowing that I did it. :)

Oh, the stealer here and in Little Rock both charge about $140 per hour. The job is about $1,200 out the door.

If I were you, I'd just cut at least 1050.00 off the price and sell it.:rolleyes:

$140 per hour?! I just died a little.

I just called the Dealer close to where I work and they said $600 w/o the Water Pump and add $200 if it needs a Water Pump, but doubts that it will. Said it includes the belt, two tensioners and the pulley. I thought he was mis-quoting the price so I said I'll have it in tomorrow and called back and talked to a guy I know from there and he said the same price and to ask for him and he'll take care of me. I didn't know he still worked there since they changed ownership. He used to give my daughter a real good price for repairs on her 99 S60 R and she would bake him cookies. He remembered her very well.

SO I'M KEEPING IT!

Lol, that is a great price. I usually only replace my water pumps when they are leaking, every 10 years or 200,000 miles.

If that is so, that is likely the lowest price dealer in the country.

I said you mean $600 for parts and labor? And he said yes. That's why I said ok when can I bring it in? I said it has 215k on it, so I think I should change the Water Pump and he said he's been doing this for 30 years and seen them with well over 300K with the original Water Pump. Said if it's not leaking don't bother changing it.

I try to tell people that all the time and they look at me like I'm crazy. The Volvo water pumps can go a long time.

I spoke to a guy the other day that changed a water pump with is belt 20,000 miles ago and the after market pump failed and messed up his head. The Volvo pumps are designed to leak before they fail.

As for the cost of that job, wow! Is that a Volvo dealer?

Yes it's MAG Vovlo here in the Columbus, OH area. They also sell VW's, Porsches, Audis, Bentleys, Range Rovers and BMW's along with any other exotic car you might want.

Car is in the shop right now. I'll let you know how much they actually charge and what all they do.

$604.14 total out the door. Labor was four hours at $85.00 per hour and the T/Belt kit was $199.63. They said they give a lesser rate and a parts discount for older cars.

As far as the OP goes, I hope that you keep your R. I am currently in the market for a 95 or so 850, I am setup to look at one near here for $2,000 for the Wagon Turbo. I would rather buy a 850R, let me know. I looked at the FCP Euro vids on YT and have decided to tackle most of the jobs on my own. It seems like the Swede's really know what they were doing when they designed these cars.

On a not so related note this is my first post :D Between the FCP Euro vids and rspi vid's on YT I decided to get a Volvo and I also credited rspi with the referral based on his vids :)

Here is some information. They started making the 850 Turbo in 94. In 95 they made the T5 which was essentially the same as the 94 Turbo, but they also made the T5R which only came in Black and Yellow (987 total and 185 were yellow imported to the USA). In 96 and 97 they no longer made the T5R they were just R's those two years. Try and find a yellow T5R, they are the hardest to find and the most unique. If you can find a yellow T5R wagon you have hit the jackpot.

How much are the R's fetching nowadays?
