Thinking of buying a 1998 850

I think that story about 500k on an 850 is an urban legend. Unless it's the secnod or third engine. I have seen very few cars with more than 250,000. Usually at that mileage wheel bearings, cv joints, seat cushions, and things like that wear out. Morevoer, most people have a tendency to stop doing the maintenance on cars at this high of mileage thus excaserbating the problem. There used to be show here in Minnesota called Auto Talk. People were encoraged to call in and report vehicles with really high miles and running with the original motor and tranny. The record was 310k on a Chevy Pick Up with a 350.

I don't know what you're saying about seat cushions, but these seats look pretty good for 304k miles:

I picked up my '96 last August for $1500 with 154k on the clock. Previous owner had the last 10 years worth of maintenance records from the same independant Volvo shop and it just needed a heater core and one of the CV boots needed to be replaced.
Since then, besides regular maintenance, I've had to replace the starter and rear brakes. My wife drives it everyday on her 64 mile round trip commute to work and hasn't missed a beat in the 17k miles we've put on since buying it. It has really been a great car that is pretty easy to work on and has made me Volvo fan.
Personally, I would highly recommend the 850.

BostonGRun, man you are sadly mistaken. I was actually looking at the car. At the time I was in my 740 that had over 350,000 on the clock at the time. When I gave my 740 away it had over 400,000 on the odometer at the time and yes, I did replace a motor at about 280,000 and yes it was because I ran it out of oil a few times, going 20,000 miles a couple of times without checking or changing the oil. It was smoking a little but not bad. Other than that it looked almost brand new. The only think wrong with it other than a small dent in the fender was a piece of plastic at the inside door handle was chipped. Absolutely NO seat wear. When it comes to the cars appearance it's all about keeping it clean, waxed and sometimes garaged. If you have tinted windows you may even excape interior fading.
The thing about it is that my job doesn't even require me to leave my county and I can put 40,000 miles on a car in a year. Also, Volvo has a High Milage club that they started when I guy put over 1,000,000 on a P1800 (the car was about 21 years old at the time). If someone has a job that requires them to drive daily, and they have to drive more than 50 miles from home, they are likely to keep the maintenance up because they don't want to get stranded on the road somewhere. I believe someone can make 500,000 miles on a motor if they use synthetic oil and put 100,000 miles per year on it easy.
With a simple google search, you can find a lot of information about Volvo's with high miles. Volvo even has a High Milage Club that you can get badges for your car when it has over 100,000, over 250,000, over 500,000. They use to give the badges for every 100,000 but was giving away so many they had to change the rules.

My neighbor's '91 Honda Accord has over 390,000 on the same motor. It has sat in his driveway with a bad strut for 4 years without moving. Some wear on interior but other than that it looks good.
OMG, Now I just found out that the P1800 made it to more than 2,000,000 miles. The crazy thing about it is that that is not the only car the guy drives. I don't think I'll ever be able to do that with one car because I drive to many at a time.
I just went over 100,000 in my 850 T-5R and it only had 78,500 on it when I purchased it 12 months ago. I have actually had it parked for 3 or 4 of those months while I had driven my 960 about 12,000 miles and a Jeep that I had about 6,000 miles. To boot, I flew on two of my trips in the past 9 months (while I normally drive to them). Once I drove 4,000 miles in 4 days in my 740. I guess we need to just start a high milage thread.

I have over 177,000 miles on my 1998 S70 T5 and the only problem is the PVC system and I am about to fix that problem. My car is Black with a Beige interior and needs the front leather replaced, but after getting in and out for fourteen (14) years what does one expect?? These cars are AWESOME!!!!
