Default Thumping Sound

Hi all,

I have a 93 Volvo 850. Just as I started driving out of my garage (not in reverse) the car made a huge thumping sound. I parked the car and tried driving it again and the same thing happened. The sound is quick and loud.

The only other thing that might be worth noting is that I drove in a very heavy rainstorm for about 45 minutes yesterday.

Any idea what this might be? And I assume with this sort of problem, I should order a tow to the repair shop (as opposed to driving it on my own)?

Thanks!

EDIT: It sounds like the thumping sound is coming from around the area of the right front tire.

You need to get under it and take a look at the CV axles. They are the only thing I can think of off hand that would make a noise loud enough to scare someone. They usually go bad slowly so it's unlikely but check to see if you see a ripped or missing CV boot.

Thanks! Assuming that's the problem, would it be safe to drive a couple miles to a repair shop (as opposed to a tow)?

If the car drives, I always drive it as long as it has oil and is NOT over heating.

AND THE BRAKES WORK

I would think you're safe to limp it in going slowly. Worst I can think of is the axle comes apart and you end up having to wait with it for the tow. Depends on how much the tow costs if it's worth the gamble.

If you posted a clip with the noise we could make a better guess at what it is.

My wife said "he should let the person out of the trunk".
