Light thumping noise from right rear wheel
All,
I haven't had a chance to really check it out yet as it has been raining like crazy here for the last 24 hours, but my wifes 01 XC-70 might be developing a problem. The car just hit 70 K, and I noticed last night that when coasting and slowing down you get a light thumping type sound from the right rear wheel. It almost sounds like a brake shoe dragging, but it doesn't feel like it.
Here is what I know so far....
It only makes the sound when coasting, and only from about 15 MPH or slower (does not make a sound above 15 MPH). It is coming from the right rear, and turning in either direction does not seem to affect the sound. Additionally, when it is making the sound, applying the brakes or even the E- brake instantly stop the sound. There is no vibration through the steering wheel or drivers seat when the car is making the sound, or when applying the brake. Any ideas??
My Mother-in-law borrowed the car the night before but noticed no problems, and my wife said she noticed no issues with it either. I rotated the tires about 250-300 miles ago, and noticed no issues withe the brakes, rotors, shoes, calipers, or hoses when I did.
Thanks for any advice!
Glenn

RE: Light thumping noise from right rear wheel
Fixed it!!
It was the lug nuts. Even though they were torqued properly, they had worked loose a bit in 300 miles. I usually re-torque the lug nuts about 500 miles after rotating tires, but these came loose a bit early.
Anyway, it is fixed.

Amen to that!! As I said, I usually re-torque lug nuts about 500 miles after rotating the tires, but for some reason, these worked loose after only about 300 miles. Granted it was only about a 1/4 turn on each lug to re-torque, but I guess that was enough to cause the noise.
Hope everyone who rotates their tires can learn from this......lug nuts can and do work loose, especially steel lug nuts against alloy rims...
