Default tiny black rubber tube connected to air filter and ???

I noticed that the tiny (1mm in diameter) tube that's coming off of the air filter cover box is not connected to anything on the other end. is it supposed to be dangling around or does it connect somewhere?
thanks

it's a 1997 volvo 850 non-turbo. there are two small tubes coming off of the air filter cover. the smaller of the two tubes is in my hand and as you can see, not connected to anything.
thanks a lot

I have a GLT, so it may be different, but that doesn't look factory. How is that bracket attached on the inside of the box? Where does the other hose run off to?

No idea what that would be for. You have an NA so they're not turbo vac lines or anything. I would say that's not factory at all.

Did you ever find out? I have one, too, just sitting (disconnected and broken) near the air filter. May be the reason oxygen sensor is always thought to be malfunctioning.

Is the Cruise Control (if fitted) working?

Pretty sure that goes to the vacuum tree.

Ok, so I had the same issue on my 96 850 N/A...This one wraps around the front of the air box and connects to the front lower part of the air box to actuate the internal flap for the secondary air pump.

It's not likely a hose would just go nowhere. I saw nothing like this on mine. First check the vacuum tree and see if you have an empty nipple there! If that doesn't solve it, another option is to find an 850 in a junkyard or even a used one for sale and see where your hose goes, or do the "smoke test" and see if a vacuum leak shows up. That could lead you to the hose's proper connector.

On my 93 I have two vac hoses to the air box as well but they connect to a vacuum activated valve that opens the fresh air flow door/valve. I say this because one tube is white and the other black like yours.

Thanks! Where, exactly, do they connect? The tiny hose at one end is just hose; at the other there is a broken right angle push-on. I have looked a little (it's awfully hot here now) for where each end would connect, but don't see a spot for either end.

Vacuum tree? Where does that reside?

Yes, cruise control works, although it's a little "late and heavy" in it's response. I have the same side fitting to the air filter box as Oreng shows (except no additional rubber hose extension). But, where from there? Where would the cruise control connection or vacuum tree be?

Thanks, all, for your help!

Ah, found the tree. All ports used or capped. Mystery continues. Will ask at Lorenzutti's today when I go by.

TexasBoy is right. I happened to see an ad at Toms parts on the web. The picture showed that connector on the bottom forward passenger corner of the air filter box. Had to twist my neck around, but found mine. Other end goes to nipple (one of 2) on rear driver side.
TB, what's the secondary air pump do, and when?

The SAS is desinged to help the cat by pumping clean air into the exhaust until the temp gets up and the cat can handle the unspent gasses effectivly....keeps the exhaust cleaner at start up.

Thanks. Little by little I learn.
Now, how to fix the distribution of inside air between vents. Mine is set on Auto I think.
