Default Tire Selection

i'm looking to replace all 4 tires on my 1997 volvo 850. i'm comparing the Yokohama AVID TRZ to the Michelin Primacy MXV4. i know the michelin's are better tires but it will cost about $250 extra for the set of 4. is it worth it? i just moved to maryland but i'll be going back to miami, florida in a year. I just do regular driving, no racing or anything (shoulda got a turbo). are there any other tires that anyone strongly recommends over the other two? i was planning on taking it in to Merchant's Tires tomorrow.
thanks a lot!

I like the Yokohamas. They ride nice and everything. Depending on how much you can spend, check out Discount Tire in your area. I have the Yokohama YK520's, which have a UTQG rating of 520 and Temp A Tract A ratings. The ride really well with the softer sidewalls. If you're not racing, I'd suggest these.

my michelin primacy's have over 50,000 miles on them and still perform like new. when i bought some yokohomas online, i eneded up having to replace them multiple times over a 10,000 mile period before i finally bought some michelins from samsclub. you kinda get what you pay for you know?

thanks for the messages. decided to go with the michelin's because i've heard of some similar complaints about the yokos not lasting too long. i see it as an investment.
thanks a lot.

I do some club racing with my 850 and just got 4 new Goodyear Eagle GT's with a 4 wheel alignment for $540. I went with 195/55R15 for the size, lowers the car another half inch, gets me into the power band of the motor a little quicker and doesn't reduce the weight limit of the car too much. The are V rated for speed, and even though I likely won't get anywhere close to 149 MPH they should hold up better to high speed cornering. First event for these tires will be Sunday, can't wait!

I also have these tires and I love them, good price, good ride and handling, quiet. Hope they last.

We have the Michelin Primacy on the 01 V70 and 96 NA. good wear, not very good handling, not very good wet traction, too expensive.

I have used Yokohamas, Michilens multiple times and Kumhos once. Of those the Michelins are by far the best ride. But I won't pay the price for Michilens on my 17" wheels, so I'm running yokohamas on them. May try the Goodyears next time around though. Never tried them.

I went witht the Goodyear Assurance. Since I have a wagon and don't go burn up the streets (did that when I was young), I stepped down in high performance rating to save money on cost. I run 205-55-16 stock for my '96 Platinum Turbo Wagon. 45,000 miles and I have 6 3/32's even wear. I bought mine a America's Tire, have them rotate ever 5k and keep the air pressure at 36 PSI.

Tires perform great in all weather as they are a true rated M&S. I live in Portland, OR where we get it all, from heat to lots of rain, freezing fog (that was a new one to me being a Nor Calif kid) and of course snow.

IMHO

I have Michelin's Primacy's on my 960. I love everything about them. A little pricy but when I ran Michelin's on my 740 GLE I use to get between 80,000 and 90,000 miles out of them consistantly.

I have Kumho's on my 17" Titants. I hope to get Michelin Pilot Sports on them soon. Hopefully they will do me better than the Kumho's. I'm a little sceptic about going to 215's. I don't want to cause an error in my odometer but may live with it. I can run the GPS to get the error and maybe tinker with the display to see if I can calibrate it.

I'll throw my $.02 in here too...I'm running Sumitomo HTYR-P01 tires on my car and i LOVE them. A friend of mine who works at Tire Rack recommended them to be because a couple guys who work there had been running them and they got excellent reviews on their website. I was able to get them at his cost, so I got 4 tires (v rated and directional no less) for about $245 installed.

having friends at Tire Rack is GOOD.

The first big purchase after acquiring my 850 Turbo Wagon in April was a new set of tires to replace the mismatched, dry-rotted set on there. I went with the best reviewed tires I could find: Continental ExtremeContact DWS. Expensive, yes. But they changed the way the car handles! It is amazing how much grip they offer. In a TireRack Challenge at the Arctic Circle, they walked away with first place for winter traction being only slightly less grippy than dedicated snow tires.

Also, Don't be afraid to negotiate prices on tires. I was able to get all four mounted, balanced with tax for around $450. All you have to do is smile and ask politely!
