Default tranny problems on my 96'

SO IV'E READ THROUGH OTHER POSTS AND IT LOOKS LIKE MY TRANSMISSION IS MESSING UP[sm=smiley13.gif].

BUT I ALSO READ ABOUT THE ABS MALLFUNCTION AND TRANNY SOLENOID.SO HOW CAN I TELL WHICH IS AT FAULT?

MY CAR SLIPS AT ALMOST EVERY GEAR AND REVS TO WAY HIGH RPMS BEFORE JERKING UP TO THE NEXT GEAR.I TRIED IT IN ECON. AND SPORT MODE WITH NO HELP...TRANNY FLUID IS OK. SOOO IF IT IS THE TRANNY WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO PAY FOR THE FIX? ALSO ANY TIPS FOR TEMPORARY FIXES WHILE I CAN GET IT CHECKED OUT?...THANKS IN ADVANCE GUYS

The first thing to do is replace the trans filter...... If that doesn't work-
You might want to try a tranny additive first, they can sometimes soften seals and clean up the clutches. If yours is revving like that sounds as if you may have already done damage. I alsotemporarily fixed an 88 240 by draining 3 quarts of trans fluid out and adding a 20 wt synthetic gear oil. It ran that way for 3 years before finally giving up. I would not recommend this if you think you may want to rebuild the tranny, but if you plan to find a used one it may be worth a try.

SORRY FOR THE PROBLEM.

IN THIS CASE, THE ABS PROBABLY IS NOT RELATED TO THE PROBLEM. VISIT A LOCAL AUTOZONE AND HAVE THEM DO A FREE DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE TO RETRIEVE FAULT CODES FROM THE ECU/TCM.

IS THE AMBER ARROW ON THE DASH FLASHING/TURNED ON? I BELIEVE THE WINTER MODE IS TURNED OFF (OTHERWISE YOU WOULD HAVE MENTIONED IT)?

THERE IS NO USER-SERVICEABLE FLUID FILTER ON THE AW50-42LE (ACCORDING TO A SERVICE MANUAL IHAVE, THERE ARE 4 SMALL FILTER + ONE LARGE FILTER).

IS THE TRANNY FLUID CLEAR RED? I HOPE IT WAS NOT SERVICED WITH A WRONG TYPE OF FLUID; TRANNY FLUIDS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE AND THE AW50-42LE IS DESIGNED FOR DEXRON-III/MERCON.

YES IF IT IS SLIPPING LIKE THAT SOME DAMAGE MAY ALREADY HAVE BEEN DONE. TRY SOMETHING UNUSUAL SUGGESTED BY applcor AFTER YOU HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THERE ARE NO CODES AND NOTHING ELSE YOU CAN DO. SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE FIXED MINOR PROBLEMS BY ADDING LUCAS TRANSMISSION ADDITIVE BUT I MYSELF HAVE NEVER TRIED IT AS MY AW50-42LE WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL I PARTED WITH IT.

REBUILDING THE AW50-42LE IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY THE MFG BUT THERE ARE SERVICE MANUALS. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE MANY OF US WOULD SAY JUST TO SWAP IT WITH ANOTHER KNOWN GOOD UNIT.

You might be able to find a high mileage Volvo 850 with good functional Tranny for fairly cheap (I have seen some going for around $400 - $500) and stick that in.
Just a suggestion!

hey guys so i found out why my car was acting up..NOT THE TRANNY!!![sm=happy046.gif]

turns out the throttle cable was waaaayyyy to tight..soon as we loosened it up it was shifting perfectly.i also forgot to mention that it was not kicking down..fixed that too...my neighbor let me borrow his scanner and pulled code 2-3-1= Long term fuel mixture too lean or too rich in part load stage. He then gave me the print out from alldatapro.com and its telling me to check the MAF and/or for a leak in exhaust system.

but on the scanner it said the o2 sensor was at fault it was only showing .5 volts at idle, even less when reving....any thoughts?

THANKS GUYS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS..EVENT THOUGH I DIDNT NEED THEM THIS TIME I KNOW I WILL SOME DAY

Glad it is fixed.

Check the vacuum elbow on the end of the intake manifold by the power steering pump.
