Transmission Swap
I'm pretty sure it will. I mean everyone does manual swaps and they use transmissions from all years in their 96's and 97's. And if you search transmissions on ebay, I was, it will say "Transmission w/ turbo Volvo 850 94 95 96 97".
Yes as long as it is a late model 94 or a 95 it will work fine. A 96 transmission will not work in the 95 car though. There is a red speed sensor in the back of the tranny that the 96 cars do not have.
Will a 96/97 engine paired with a 96/97 transmission work in a 94? I know there is something different with the speedometer sensor in the earlier years that is different than the later years. But I've heard that there are ways around it? Just curious because I want to put a 96/97 motor/transmission into my 94 wagon that I'm working on.
Ok, because a lot of the lower mileage engines I find are 96/97's, and I want to eliminate the EGR, even though I know I will be throwing a CEL because of it, and it doesn't make a difference, I just kind of want to. Haha.
I have no idea if the transmission needs to be replaced either. I figure that with 300k miles on it it wouldn't be a bad idea, and what better time than when the engine is out of the car.
So to recap: Any motor with 94 tranny= OK
Any motor with 96/97 tranny=problems

Ok. What is the difference with the manifolds that the ones from a 96/97 wouldn't work? And would the tranny from a 95 work with 94 wiring?
PS sorry for all the questions, but this is new to me, but very interesting.
edit: I am going to use a 94 tranny, there's a Volvo salvage yard in northern Wisconsin that I just found last week, and they have several really low mileage 94 transmissions, so, problem solved there.

There will be a difference for like EGR or Air pump on the newer and older ones. The older cars had EGR the newer ones had Air pump. If you can get lucky you can find a 96 that had nothing.
So the 94-95 had the EGR, and then in 96 they didn't have anything, and then in 97 they had an air pump? But if I get a 96/97 engine, can't I just drop the entire thing in and i'll just be getting a cel for the egr? I don't know, I guess when that times comes I'll see what happens.
Right, I would either do that or get a custom tune for it.
So I would be fine with dropping in a 96/97 engine and using a 94 transmission? I would just need a different ecu for it.
Either this engine thing is more complicating than I thought it was, or I'm just over thinking it.
