Up arrow problem solved I hope
Hi everyone!
It's been awhile since I posted but I just got a problem fixed on my volvo (94 turbo, automatic) and just wanted to share. These boards always give some great solutions so I thought maybe this could help someone in the future.
Problem:
I did a short run to the grocery store, put the car in park, and all of a sudden my check engine and the arrow light came on. I am not mechanical in the least so freaked out a little, but I knew Bessie wouldn't leave me stranded in the parking lot. I went to the store and came back hoping the problem would be gone..but no. I have the manual but wasn't in my car so had no idea what the arrow meant. The car cranked and drove fine like it always does. I immediately came in and checked the forums and saw pnp switch problem possible but everyone who had that issue was experiencing shifting problems or acceleration issues which I wasn't having. Just to make sure I drove it to an empty lot, played around with the gear shift, and checked the acceleration..all normal.
Solution: Took it to the mechanic today and they said it was the gear position switch and also reverse lights weren't working. The check eng. and arrow have not made a return appearance yet...knock on wood.
Curious though, when I drove it to the mechanic, I only had the check engine light. The arrow didn't make an appearance. Anyway just wanna thank these forums because when I saw the manual and saw the arrow pointed to possible transmission issues my thoughts immediately went to the worst (new tranny).

RE: Up arrow problem solved I hope
Glad to hear that the problem has been solved and thanks for sharing the experience.
I assume codes are still stored in the ECU's and I would clear them. Sometimes CEL & arrow are finicky and they show up for trivial reasons.
Refer to the attachments, or if there is an AutoZone near you, they can hook up and OBD-II scanner and clear the codes for you (unless they are emissions system related, in which case they are not allowed to reset codes in some states without having the problems corrected). Also note, that AutoZone clerks are taught that any car made before '96 does not have OBD-II function, which is not true on some '94 850s. I had an 850 Turbo T5, which did have the function and I often had to tell them the car DID have OBD-II.
