95 850 NA- 200k just did a pcv service and car runs well with nice clean plugs. Recent heater core. Been noticing a vague oil odor when sitting still idling fan on windows up (of course) Not really a strong smell, but I think I smell something and I don't think it is a coolant smell. I didnt clean out the EGR valve as part of the pcv service. Any thoughts what I might check? Thanks Dave

 

Not really Dave. How many miles since the PCV? Did you change oil after the PCV? Did you replace the oil cap seal?

 

Are you leaking any oil at all ?? Might want to check the back of the engine around the exhaust manifold as it would cook any leaking oil and the smell would get pulled in at the heater intake.

 

I know this is a STUPID question, but the reason I ask is I have done this myself....

By any chance is the rag that you use to check your oil underneath your seat or in-between the seat and the console?

I had the rag that i check my oil with on the floor in the back, and I couldnt figure out why I smell oil every time I get in to the car. Well DUH there was a oil cover rag in the back.... I felt like an ***..

 

Matt- that does sound like something I would do, but no, I dont have an oily rag under the seat. I just did the pcv- about a month ago, replaced all the stuff, did not change the seal on the oil fill cap, I'll do that easy one. I'll do a visual on that heater air intake area today at lunchtime. It's not real noticable, but I smell something...thanks for the input, Dave
