Default Valves rattle on cold start up

Hi all...new to this site but long time Volvo owner...I posted this in the "engine" forum but go no response. Hopefully someone can help me with this:

My 850 Turbo valves rattle like crazy on the first start up of the day, then settle down and I have no more issues until the next cold start...as if all the oil in the top end of the motor drains back into the sump.

I know some engine oil pump designs have a spring loaded one-way valve that prevents this which can stick, or a worn pump can cause this. Can anyone help with this, or provide a different explaination of why the top end rattles so much on start?

Motor has 140K on it, with "minor" oil consumption ~ 1/2 Quart per 3,000 miles between changes if that helps anyone.

Thanks!

Jim

Are you running a Volvo oil filter?
The Volvo oil filters have check valves to help hold oil pressure after shutting the car off.

Hmmm, not sure...never noticed what the local garage that does all my work puts on, but will check. If not I'll give that a try. My S60 doesn't do that and it has the same filter, I assume.

Could a worn oil pump have sufficient clearance to allow oil drain down?

Thanks for your response,

Jim

The S60 is a different setup.

Maybe a worn oil pump can. But it might just be the lifters bleeding down.

Agree w/tech; use volvo or OEM (Mann) filters ONLY! I buy'em by the case.

So how long does it take for the lifters to quiet down? A few seconds (2-3) is normal on cold starts.

Thanks for the responses...I'll switch to Volvo filters, hopefully the 850 and S60 use the same one.

It only is the first 2-3 seconds until oil pressure builds. I hate the idea of no pressure in the top end of the motor until it builds up, especially on cold start. If the OEM filter does not resolve this, it sounds like excessive clearances in the head? Is it time to rebuild the head (gasket up)?

Thanks again, great forum!

Jim

Oil filter first
Sump orings next
some "ticking" in any higher mileage hydraulic lifter engine is to be expected.
When you replace the filter add one quart of "high mileage" oil along with the others, might "swell" the oring a bit.

"After the running in period, with a mixture of free way and town driving, up to 0.4 litres per 1.000 km is considered normal."

Got that out of VADIS

So .4 liter is .42 quarts and 1,000km = 620 miles so you are WAY below spec on consumption

what weight oil are you using...10w30; 5w20; 10w40; 20w50. A thinner weight oil may cause similiar sounds as well I think?

Am running 10w40. Where I live in NE Ohio it is generally cool, and in the winter so cold it hurts, and I've always believed 20w50 would be too heavy and create issues.

1996850Turbo suggested "o-rings in the sump"...what o-rings are those? I assume the pan would need to be dropped to access / swap 'em out.
