Volvo 850 1994 Check Engine Light
I just bought a Volvo 850, 1994, non turbo, Station wagon about 2 weeks ago.
The service engine light comes on routinely, then goes off.
The other day, I had the radiator and upper and lower hoses replaced.
When I got car back, today, I noticed that the "Check Engine" light is on.
My mechanic doesn't have diagnostic tools. I tried disconnecting battery for about 15 minutes, but the light still comes on.
Serious problem? Everything seems to work, drives fine, etc...
Thanks for suggestions on how to approach this next.!

On your '94 it doesn't take diagnostic tools, they are built in. Here is a post that shows the location and the procedure for reading your codes.

Have a pen a paper handy to write them down.
Here is a link to the "Decoder Ring".

You can also turn off your service light by using socket A-7.

RE: Volvo 850 1994 Check Engine Light
Thanks for all the info.
Does the light staying on mean that there is something put together wrong?
He did have to take a lot off to get that upper radiator hose replaced.
Or, is it possible that I just need to clear the light because a code was issued during his repair? I disconnected the neg end of battery for 20 min, but that made no diff (before I got all the great material you sent)
Thanks again.

RE: Volvo 850 1994 Check Engine Light
The light just staying on is not normal. Does it do that in the other sockets or just A-2? If so I would suspect that the button is somehow stuck in the on position. The boxes are internally a very simple system and many folks have successfully taken the A/B boxes apart and fixed the problems. I have not had to mess with mine on the 1994 and my 2 1996s have the OBD-II ports.
If your car is a turbo you also have an OBD-II port under the slotted coin holder in front of the shifter and codes can be read and erased from there with a standard OBD-II scan tool. Most of the chain auto parts stores will do it for free (Just tell them it is a 1996 or they will tell you it will not work). Good luck with it and if you are able to come up with codes post the numbers back.

Hey now Tmmaida,
Two days ago I finally got tired [:@]of seeing the lambda light on, came on due to an exhaust gasket leak, and I did something about it.

This is as straight forward as it gets. Youcan't mess this up unless you don't clear the codes.
You'll need to check all of the codes, don't forget to post them here, and then follow the procedure for clearing them listed in the above (3 up from here)post.
Once this has been completed, and you've postedyour codes here, you can then reset the lambda light following the link listed here.
Remember that all of the codes need to be shown (flashed to you via the port light/led) at least once, then they can be cleared.
