Hello there! I'm sorry if this is a dumbass question, but I wanted to ask whether or not all volvo 850 models had a barometric pressure sensor?
I'm currently helping my dad with his 1996 volvo 850 2.5 10 valve auto (with over 300k kilometers) which was abandoned for over two years. It currently has quite a lot of trouble starting up, and when it starts the engine dies the moment I touch the throttle or when I try to switch gears. However, it does not have a rough idle, it idles very smoothly. It also has a very potent gas/burning smell of some kind coming from underneath the car.
I had a friend to check it and he said it might be a sensor thats broken. So as we were going through the sensors (intake air temp sensor, o2 sensor etc) I noticed the area where the barometric sensor is supposed to be is empty and I had found a detached small rubber hose. So thats where the question comes in, did all or only some 850s came with the barometric pressure sensor? Does it have any effect whatsoever on the engine if it's broken/missing? Once again im sorry if its a dumb question, im no mechanic and im certainly no volvo 850 connoisseur. many thanks
I think you are thinking about the MAP sensor (which measures the air pressure in the manifold- effectively doing the job of a barometer). you can google for the location. If you are smelling gas, then it may well be the fuel pressure regulator or some other fuel leak. the fuel pressure regulator sits under the intake manifold and has a vacuum line into it. There's a diaphram inside the pressure regulator which can tear and then gas may find its way into the intake or if the vacuum line is off, it could leak out.
Also check Volvotips.com as they have posted a repair manual which may give you some ideas
Yea, as it turns out i was looking in the wrong place (the right side of the engine bay). I found it or at least what i think it is above the engine fan. Is this what its supposed to look like? And is the small rubber pipe supposed to connect somewhere?
