Default Volvo 850 - Reverse Gear Does Not Engage

Revers gear does not engage. While in reverse, the car feels like nuetral. All other gear positions function normally. I topped the transmission gearbox with some fluild, but did not resolve the issue. Any suggestions?

Maybe get a complete transmission service.

FYI-your signature. 850's were only made until 1997.

Did a flush and the problem worsend. Now the car struggles in the D (Drive) position as well. As mentioned in some other forums, losing Reverse gear is the first symptom of a tranny about to go bad. I am taking the car to a Transmisson Repair shop Monday. I think the clutch and some other parts may have to be replaced.

I have read Tranmission shops can be a big rip off. Please share any experiences with tranny repair/rebuild. I am seeking tips before I go to the shop next week.

Thanks.

I don't know how much it would be on Volvos but on my old Grand Prix, it was about $2000 for a rebuild. To keep from getting ripped off, make sure they tell you exactly what will be replaced after they get it apart. If they could actually show you what they are doing, that would be even better. Make sure they show you all of the old parts so you know they changed them. Hopefully they won't just show you some parts from another trans. I always try to look for trans shops that have been around for a while. You can usually google a name of a shop and if there has been any complaints, it might show up.
