Smile Volvo 850 Timing after cylinder head job.

I was doing dougnuts in the parking lot and broke the hose off the rad when I hit a curb. Coolant leaked out and the engine over heated, had to take off the head and do a head job on it. any way I got it all back together now and it runs horrible. The timing seems to be off. and every site I've looked up says to line up the crankshaft with TDC and make sure the v notches line up on the cam gears. There's only one problem I removed the cam gears when I was polishing the camshafts. So the v notches are irrellevent. Is there another way I can set the timing?

Your humble volvo enthusiast. Chris.

You will need to either find a cam lock tool or make one. You can make one from the link below.

Then put the timing marks proper and then you should be good.

The marks are irrelevant on the gears to begin with, do not pay attention to those. put the cams in, lobes up on cylinder one. You want the cam slots to be parallel on the side of the block opposite to the gears. The bolts on the cams will make a triangle the exh cam and a Y on the intake cam

The timing is slightly off right there from tightening down the valve cover, but once you put them in, you have some room for adjustment. Also, I did this twice, once without a cam lock tool. It can be done, just watch more carefully.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but we figured out why is was running so badly, (we did the timing as suggested by gilber33 and it was still running horrible, we found that we installed the cam sensor backwards on the exaust cam. So the engine was sparking 60 degress advance. I was surprised it even ran lol. and now it runs nice. funny thing happened after all that, i found a gas can in the truck and emptied it into the tank for safty sake, and the car started running horribly again, it turned out the gas in the gas can wasn't gas it was water. so I spent all night syphoninh out the tank. lol anyway its wall fixed now, thanks guys!
