Water pump failure (pic)
Hey guys,
Thought I'd share a pic with you. I have recently come back from a 1500mile driving holiday, the car ran great.
I had a stroke of luck though.
Two days before I was due to go, I had installed a N/A throttle body, custom made stainless steel intercooler tubing, replaced the heater core (sweet smell), new expansion tank and changed the coolant.
The day before I am due to go, there is a puddle of coolant next to the right front wheel. "Oh oh" I thought, "I haven't tightened one of the expanion tank hoses properly."
No such luck. Upon removing the timing belt cover, it is weeping out of the water pump.
Poo.
So a new timing belt, new oil seals, waterpump, and accessory serpentine belt gets put on.
Doesn't leak a drop all holiday.
Mechanic says better it happens before the trip, and not in the middle of it. He also says he has never seen a water pump fail like this one did. Most of the time the bearing wears out, or the shaft moves inward and eats into the block.
Mine has moved outward and was eating into it's own housing. It has visible score marks, yet was running silently. I had no idea it was failing apart from the leak after parking it.
It could have been a lot bigger repair bill if I had not caught it in time.

Hello, I am new to the fórum and had some problems with my waterpump
Here some info to help other owners
Type of car XC90 2006 motor D5244 diesel 185 HP automatic box
Symptoms: engine temperature normal at idle ,temperature raise and boiling under load, weak cabin heater, upper hose to radiator hot ,lower cold ,cooling fan operates correctly but permanent, thermostat ok, no return flow from radiator in expansion vessel.
Changed thermostat (You need to remove the hydraulic steering pump, leave hoses connected, behind the pump is a hole in the support to acess the lower fixing bolt of the thermostat, Torx 40) Problem was still there.
Removed timing belt and water pump, waterpump shaft was broken at impeller.a new pump and timing belt kit solved the problem.
