WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!

RE: WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!
Okay Sweet T5R!
>when im in neutral and rev to 3k RPMs, I hear a weird noise like if something doesn't want to move
Uh, could you be a little bit more specific (click, knock, groan, drone, thud, bang, clash (not "crash"), shatter, ping, clunk, buzz, squeal/squeak, high-pitch/low-pitch noise, etc...)? I've heard of a 100 different noise that sounded like if something didn't want to move[8D]. I think other members would want to know the same, and if possible, can you locate roughly where it's coming from?
BTW, 120k is not much for 850s'.
Will wait for your reply.

RE: WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!
OK Sweet T5-R,
If the turbo was the suspect, you would havenoticed boost performance problem (fluctuating boost, no boost, etc...). Turbochargers are extremely susceptible to oil starvation & deteriorated oil, as they're spinning at about 200,000 RPM (higher/lower, depending on the unit). If you think the noise could be from there, just make sure that it's mounted securely (do this when the engine is cold of course), as well as the security ofductings. Minor oil seepage on the bottom of the turbocharger is considered normal and there isn't much you can do about it (quoted from a dealer tech and a few other professionals).
So, I believe you get the same noise both in "N" & "P", but not in gear, correct?
Well, it is impossible for us to actually inspect it, so I would suspect one or more of the engine/tranny mounts that is failing. Make sure that all fluids are at proper levels & conditions, and also inspect the serpentine accessory drive belt for cracks. If you wish, you can take the timing belt cover off and inspect everything in there. The noise may be coming from one or more of the pulleys, if they have never been lubricated or replaced, even though this does not make sense that the noise doesn't occur when in gear. If it's a buzz, however, it is most likely that something is vibrating due to loose/worn out fixture (again, mounts, etc...).
This is the best I can do for the day. I wish you luck...

RE: WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!
OK Sweet T5-R,
I just wish you noticed it earlier so we could've narrowed down the problem.....
Anyway, at this point I am really suspecting one or more of the engine & transmission mounts, most likely the one on the passenger side. But it could also be the upper brace support, etc...
Here's a reference:
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/front_mount.php
This is solely my personal opinion, but it helps to add a word of "thanks", when someone replies to your questions. We have no obligations to help others, but we do anyway from our ethics & conscientious minds. We do not receive any compensations from the forum for sharing our knowledge or time, and the only reward we receive is one simple word of "thanks" from those who benefited from our assistance.
Anyway, I wish you the best and hope someone else has different solutions as to the noise.
Regards,
JPN

RE: WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!
OK Sweet T5-R,
I apologise if my reply seemed even slightly offensive; I have absolutely no intention to be rude.
You are one of the very few people who has good common sense lately. The world is becoming full of rude people, regardless of what part of the world, and in some forums there are people who don't know any better but go after others' opinions, keep denying what people have suggested and think they're always right. While they may havemore accurateanswers, with that type of attitude they won't have much success inthe real worldand I feel sorry for them.
Anyway, thanks for your thanks and I wish the cause of the noise would be found soon.
Sincerely,
JPN

RE: WEIRD NOISE MAJOR HELP!
Hi Sweet T5R,
Replacementof the pax-side mount isn't difficult, but may not be within the capability of a cave man[8D].
You will need the following:
1. Floor jack + jackstands.
2. 3/8" drive socket tools, preferably 6-point sockets for the mount bolts.
3. Breaker bar (3/8" drive is better).
4. Extension bar (at least a foot long).
5. Universal joint (Universal socket is better; the 6-point socket that swivels around).
6. Torque wrench.
With the front-end of the car on jackstands securely & the right wheel removed, take the bolts out. Note, that the bolt I circled in Red is the one that needs universal joint as the clearance is tight. When all bolts are out, lift the right side of the engine just enough to slide the mount off, you wouldn't need to lift it any more than a half inch or so. Then, clean the mating surface between the mount & engine block & subframe before installing the new mount. Follow Bay-13's instructions, and the torque values are in Haynes manual. I do not have the manual with me and my Volvo manual is missing torque value for the mount. As for the mount, I bought mine at FCP Groton:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850mounts.htm
This mount has a mechanical wear indicator, which is a metal botch. The botch should be at its bottom-end if the mount is worn out. But I didn't see much difference when I installed a new one. Also note, that the mount is different according to the model year and VIN so make sure to check which mount you need.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
