How do you tell if thats all that is wrong? I mean normally broken timing belt = blown head gasket right? I am thinking about getting it tomorrow if everything checks out.

Broken timing belt means bent valves. Which mean major expense on the head and possible the entire engine if it damaged the pistons. $500 for it is still not a bad price even if you have to replace the engine.
