What makes an R an R..
The R's have a different front bumper with foglights,17 inch rims,Different ECU that gives it 240HP. Also suede mixed in in the interior.
Also has every option Volvo had avalible during those years.

The R has more Horspower out of the box but it is mainly due to the ECU programming. IPD claims the same horsepower with their ECU whether it is an R or a standard (VIN 57) turbo. I don't own an R (yet) but I am fairly certain the exhaust manifold is different but the rest of the car is pretty much the same. The cars had a "sport suspension" option that may have been standard on the R.

The majority of the car is the same.
The sway bars are a little bigger. I think the rest is the same. I also think but not 100% sure the exhaust manifold is the same. I don't think they changed them till the S60R's.
My T5R and wifes 96 Turbo have the same turbo on them. Mostly the HP gain is the ECU programming.
Some R's have the Novimats suspension under them.

Yes you can!!!
But you can also install an afterket Turbo guage and a MBC and up the boost to about 10 PSI and be at about the same place as having the R computer.

You can also see what Volvo has to say about their changes at Volvo's site: http://www.volvocars.com/us/tools/Ow...lvoOwners.aspx
Mainly the ECU, suspension, larger wheels, interior trim, and all the options.

On the R exhaust manifold, the 5th cylinder flows "under" the 4th and 3rd as apposed to on top like the rest of the 850s. it gives you easier access to the manifold bolts. but I'm not sure if there is a performance increase to having it that way. it looks to me they both have the same flow, just in a different direction.
This is Volvo's take on it:
