What needs replacement? C/V joint or whole axle?
When I turn left, a loud clicking sound comes from one of the wheels. Do I have to change the whole axle or is it possible to change only the CV joint? I'd save a bunch on S&H if I could get just the joint.-
On a side note what if I hear a faint clicking sound from both fronts while going straight? I put my car up on jacks yesterday to try to isolate a metal grinding sound and put it in drive with it up in the air. I heard "clicking" as the wheels turned. Normal? It wasn't only durning turning, also straight. It wasn't very loud, kinda subtle.
Sorry to say but usually when you hear it clicking it is already damaged and pretty much trashed.
If you can only get the joint then that would be fine.

I konw on the VW list I also belong to, there has been an issue with cheap knockoff axle assemblys being junk. If you get a whole axle, buy a quality one!

That´s a HUGE difference. I can´t believe the $75 part has the same quality.
Has anybody here had any experience with the cheapo part?
My trusted ASE master technician, Jim at Jim’s Imported Car Clinic, Rutland Vermont, once told me that he had problems with cheap axle unit.
